I would much rather pay for the dogs return to Mr. Reid.

Why?  So he can be burdened with a dog he doesn't want?  So he can sell it again and not bother to screen the next buyer any better than he did the last one?

He has his $1000.00.  If he wants the dog bad enough he will refund the buyer and contact Steph to work it out.  I don't see him making this happening.  Steph tried to contact him and he chose to ignore her for whatever reason.  The ball is completely in his court now.  If he steps up and does what is right, you can bet Steph will sing his praises on here.  She always gives credit where credit is due.  She also lets people know when something stinks.

So breeders take notice.  If you want to sell your dogs, use a little common sense in where you are placing the pup and have the decency to take back a dog when it doesn't work out, regardless of the age of the dog, the time passed and don't drag your feet about it.  If you cannot afford to do this then you have no business breeding litters in the first place.

It's all very simple, really.

And no, reading a petfinder ad is not going to give you the whole story.  That comes from Steph once you have filled out her adoption form and she considers you worthy of taking one of her rescues.  You have to prove yourself to her, not the other way around.

Why ? Maybe you should ask yourself, who is Mr. Reid.

by beetree on 03 January 2010 - 18:01

Okay, now I need to ask, "Who is Mr. Reid?" Someone please tell me! He does seem to be someone who doesn't want the dog back is about all I know, because otherwise he would have had the dog by now. The surrender papers are signed, the point is moot.

In any case, I just made a donation to MontanaGSD, totally inspired in different ways by both BE4U and Hodie's postings above. And DebiSue's, post too, I almost forgot to mention hers, "put up or shut up", was just about right.

I don't know Mr. Reid.  I don't think I care, for that matter.  The simple fact is that he sold a puppy to a couple that was in no way prepared to deal with it.  He took the dog back.  He then took more of their money, and sold them an obedience trained dog that he apparently traded for with someone else.  Thereby, it's not his dog to begin with.  Then, he didn't respond to the rescue, or the owner when issues arose.  Finally, faced with the negative publicity on here, he calls the owner, but the not the rescue to whom the dog was surrendered WHEN HE FAILED TO CALL THE OWNER BACK..  And then Steph is the profit mongering nasty person who has hurt Reid's reputation?

Excuse me?

I have reread the thread three times, BE, and I can find no where where Reid offers to take the dog back, refund or no refund.  He simply blames the owner.  Then you suggest the reason the dog threatened the husband is because maybe the husband threatened the wife and the dog is just protecting her.  Maybe that is the case.  Maybe not.  The lady has MS, and perhaps she is simply unable to be the boss, and the dog has assumed the alpha roll, and threatened the husband as one male to another.  Who knows?  But when they get to Steph, and they charge the door, act like absolute nuts, and have no self control, it is patently obvious that the dog doesn't view people as the boss, which to some extent tells me that they didn't have a clue how to handle him.

Whose fault is it?

Ray Reid, for not assessing the new owner's ability to handle, train, and communicate with the dog.  The owner, who didn't apparently have the ability or the time to pursue the exercise, the training, etc, that the dog needed to be a well adjusted member of the family.  Maybe more.

Steph is an awesome person, BabyEagle.  She is passionate about what she believes in, which is something that I admire.  She takes no crap from anyone and will not back down, just gives of herself tirelessly and freely, doing what she can for the GSD.  She was critically injured a few months back, for God's sake, and still continued to do what she can for the breed!  As to profit from adoptions, you really have no clue...None at all.  I could go into detail, but I won't...Don't know if Steph would appreciate it, so I'll keep my peace, but let's just put it this way....That kind woman does more for her fellow human and the GSD breed than a lot of people I know, and she's one of the least able to do so.  There is no profit in the dog rescue business, and there's apparently no shortage of condemnation, either.

It's easy to say it's all about the money, but if you adopt a dog out for two hundred and fifty dollars, and you've spent five thousand on medical bills for it, where's the profit?  That's what I'd like to know.

Steph is dear to me, very dear to me, and also to a bunch of the people on this board who know her and love her.  God Bless you, Steph!

Crys and Oakley, the dog the breeder would have taken back, and killed.

Baby,
RE;
"Especially when they list on petfinder before they have the dog."

In response to us listing on petfinder before we have the dog...there is a purpose for that, the reason is to get interest in the dog asap. So we don't have to have it in rescue as long hopefully...people are looking constantly before they even contact us, so it helps to let them know what is available...

The market fluctuates alot. Some days I have many calls from prospective adopters and then one goes for weeks with no calls. I get called all the way from 7am to 11pm....even weekends....

I answer the phone no matter what, unlike some rescues that will only answer an email, they refuse to talk to you on the phone until after you have filled out an application, and then it is like pulling teeth sometimes to get someone to call you,  and then sometimes not even then....I like the one on one personal touch, so I can assess the owners/adopters better...I really don't need to explain myself to you or anyone...you wouldn't even try to understand anyhow...

Another amazing thread on which quite disparate persons are in (rare) agreement regarding Steph and her conduct. ¶Beetree, I am in full agreement and also sending Steph a check first thing in the morning. ¶Unless I am very much mistaken, Reid is a DVG judge and former officer. ¶Now, I have had a hard day at training, getting caught up and tripped by a long line doing protection with one dog, while the other escaped from his crate, and was in the front seat of the car turning the lights off and on and leaving LOTS of nose-prints on all the windows. Night all.

Folks,

This thread came to my attention through another forum.  The only information I have about this specific situation is what is posted in this thread.

As I have read this, I've the distinct impression that the rescue is not interested in getting the dog back to Ray Reid.  No where does she ask him to take the dog back.  It seems instead that she is insistent on an approach that appears beligerent in print.  He has said that he was willing to discuss it off board with those who cared to contact him via email. I don't see that this has happened with the rescue person.

It appears to me this was not a dog that Ray had selected for his own program.   According to his reply, he offered another puppy which was declined and the person insisted on a trained older dog.  He got her the trained older dog, purchased the dog specifically for her and this cost her nothing more.  The second dog was guaranteed for 60 days.  From what I can tell, she insisted that the dog was doing well, didn't need training over that period.  I have not seen either the rescue nor the owner say that they asked Ray to take the dog back.

I have known Ray for more than 20 years.  I have taken classes from him when he was teaching, I have taken private lessons from him when I traveled 1000 miles to do it. I have boarded dogs with Ray.  I have met and spoken with people with Vom Haus Reid dogs.  I have watched them work their dogs.  I have been honored to raise one Vom Haus Reid dog and very honored to have the second (all of 17 weeks) living with me now.  I flew from Arkansas to Oregon for her. Hopefully, the rescue will have read this far so she will have heard something good about "this man and his dogs."

In his post Ray said that he would discuss this with anyone who cared to email him.  I would suggest that path.  Posting your indignation may give some of you some weird satisfaction but I don't see that it accomplishes anything else.

He said, she said. Does that really matter?  Maybe to a few.  But, in the end the only thing that matters is that this GSD get a home!  So, he's out there, looking for a home.   Take him or leave him but leave you're  comments at the do0r if they're not positive.

Audra Oliver,
Please read the first post where I said I called him and left a message for him, also a post later on I stated that I called him the day I heard about the dog and told him I was getting a dog in from him and would he take him...I REPEAT!!!! HE WON'T RETURN MY PHONE CALL EITHER...AND I TOLD HIM I WAS THE MONTANA GERMAN SHEPHERD RESCUE AND THAT I HAD A WEBSITE!!!! READ ALL THE POSTS AUDRA...I TRIED TO GIVE HIM HIS DOG BACK...NOW HE IS IN MY CARE AND HE STILL HASN'T CONTACTED ME...INSTEAD OF POSTING HIS COMMENT, DO YOU THINK HE COULD HAVE CALLED ME INTEAD OR EMAILED ME????

SHIT THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS.

I JUST WANT TO FIND A GOOD HOME FOR THE DOG NOW...RAY HAS NOT SAID ANYWHERE THAT HE WOULD TAKE THE DOG BACK...END OF STORY AND BY THE WAY HE DID NOT GIVE A 60 DAY GUARANTEE ON THE DOG...I HAVE THE CONTRACT OF SALE AND WILL POST IT HERE ON THE NEXT POST...

""he won't get back to her, and she has been trying for couple months. I called and left a message for him and he then called her, said he would call her back and hasn't yet. ""
