Moons,
let's be real you didn't post this question to start a topic on GSD's.  Your stuck with a puppy that you either can't or don't want to care for much longer.  Why don't you try www.germanshepherds.com go on their forum and post your puppy.  I don't understand the statement that you would sell the dog for a pet price?  Weren't all of the pups sold as pets at a pet price?  Call the GSD rescue groups in your area and let them know that you have an adorable puppy left over, they will help you place it.

Sorry, but I'm kinda pissed, especially by Sunsilver's comment:

Reputable breeders would sell the dogs cheaply as pets, or maybe have them PTS as a last resort.

What reputable breeder puts a healthy puppy to sleep???????  Am I just that naive or is this what your Shiloh Shepherd breeders do???? wtf!  Wow, that is horrible.  Please name 1 reputable breeder that would do this.  Amazing what you think is reputable.  A reputable breeder will take back a dog they bred and re home it or keep regardless of age for the life of the dog.  Those are the breeders I consider reputable and I can name them.  Does any one have a conscience or ethics or morals?

I have to agree with shostring, Michael, Sam, judron, chrueta, delacruz and some others.

Breeding is not supposed to be all about the money that can be made of off a cash cow bitch.  It should be about the betterment of the breed and a passion for producing wonderful companion animals.  If you don't have a plan to care for the dogs that are left maybe these breeders who PTS their left over dogs shouldn't breed.  Moons, I know you don't like shelters, they are filled with dogs that probably shouldn't have been bred.  But, your puppy would stand a better chance there than with Sunsilver's friends.

Contact your local GSD rescue, they are usually very compassionate people who often have a waiting list of clients looking for good dogs.

Jim

Jim,
What can I say, ya got me !!!!
Just put the bunny back in the box.
Its not worth arguing about your ethics over anyone elses.
Chances?  Chances at what?
We do see things differently.
For the very last time, this was not about my puppy.
A few of you guys have to take everything three times around the block.
Hell just ask.
Anyway I am glad you put your two cents in...............:)

Moons.

This is being responsible........doesn't matter who gets pissed.

OMG - am I agreeing with Sunsliver?

Cool!

Sita'sMom,
I liked your post about training a healthy pup and letting it mature and develop into a fine adult. :)
I agree too, it is called taking responsiblity. Notice the people against pts didn't offer to take on all of the unwanted/unsold pups?

Jim,
The waiting list for dogs trying to get homes is probably a lot longer than the list of people looking for dogs, otherwise there wouldn't be so damned many waiting for homes. I bet that many "reputable" breeders DO pts healthy dogs, but won't admit it for fear of losing their "reputable" status.

I have never had this issue. I usually have more homes than pups. If this were to happen, I would keep the dog myself rather than dump it at a shelter. I would consider a low price to a pet home under a spay/neuter contract, but most likely I would just keep the dog and see what it matures to. There is always a job to give! As for owning too many dogs? That is not an issue for me. If I had to go out and get another job in order to feed what is mine, I would do it. But dumping the dog? No, that would not happen.

I would bet a lot of vets would not put down a healthy pup . Especially from a breeder,,  (more then once ). They may sell you the mix you need to do it yourself . But vets have ethics also.

Wow, Sitasmom you agree that putting down a healthy pup is responsible breeding, simply because the breeder can't sell it.  It is amazing to me.  What happened to your Christian values that you speak of so much?

Maybe it's me that just doesn't get it.   This board often enlightens and surprises me to how some people think and how different my values are than theirs.  I never thought I lived a sheltered life till I came here.

I have volunteered for a GSd rescue for years and have adopted dogs and have found homes for dogs.  I have saved dogs form hi kill shelters.  Breeders like you Von ruiz or other "reputable" breeders of your sort have no business breeding dogs, if that is how you see the reality of your "business" and the value of an animals life.  That is my opinion.

Yeah great post as usual Sitasmom, we learn a little more about your dog handling skills and how responsible you are with each on topic post you write.

I understand how an unwanted litter can happen. A dog from an unwanted litter was dumped on me........Mom was black lab, father was fencer jumper. Come to find out - all the pups were psycotic! After the dog we ended up with bit a dozen of our closest friends we put it down.

How was the dog able to bite a dozen of your closest friends??????  I can see maybe one or two, but a dozen.  That is called irresponsible.  Did the dog get loose at one of your "I hate Obama meetings"  and bite everyone there?

I hope the judge at your BH isn't a democrat.

I can honestly say, I HAVE NEVER, had a left-over, unwanted pup. In the event there was an extra, it would remain MINE. No if, and or buts about it!!
As it is, when I have pups, I love them all. I cry when they go. The thought of putting any to sleep Would NEVER be an option, EVER.
I will ALWAYS take back a dog. And if it does come back, it will remain with me. I don't believe that dogs are disposable.
In all my years of having dogs, I have only had to take back one, and that is T-Bone, chicken eater. The people that brought him back to me bring me ample dog food to cover his eating expense, pay for his license, shots, etc.,
As I stated in a previous thread, I have a waiting list for pups, and my list is growing. I havn't had a litter since my new Years babies.

So far I have not had any LEFT OVER  puppies. Last year I bred 3 litters and two of those were of 7 puppies and they were booked before birth, the other litter was only 2 and I did not advertise them thinking that I would keep them both but as it turned out I had people ringing me wanting to buy them and in the end I let them both go as they were not quite what I was looking for.

This year I have only bred 1 bitch due in 2 weeks and if they do not sell I will keep them till they do. I would NEVER put them in a shelter NOT EVER but I would drop my price if I had to. Nor would I give them away unless it was to some one I knew well.

Another thought...  some 4-H clubs have Dog obedience classes.  If there's one in your area you might find a Teen with much promise as a dog person you could "foster" and introduce to the sport.   My 1st dog wasn't til I was in my 20's and I often wish I'd known more about shows, Handling, training and such back in my teens to learn from someone in the sport.  I would have made a great Jr Handler... ya never know your extra pup could be a link to a great future for someone??

Just a thought.
