I agree. I'd love to seen an evenly matched (numbers and quality of training/handling) competition between gsds and mals.

I still say the gsd reigns supreme in temperament, though!!

Mystere
I agree with temperament, i have not seen many Mals working in Competitions as i say they are the minority over here, but they were a little highly strung to say the least but overall they did the job well, but Shepherds are in a league of there own for me

Steve,

I thought you were in Belgium? Have you ever been to any of the Belgian Ring clubs or events over there?

I find it very interesting that someone from Belgium would make statements like that. I would imagine most of the Malinios people in Belgium are doing Belgian Ring, but I find it hard to believe there would not be a far share of Mals doing IPO as well?

I would really find it hard to believe that 75% of police dogs in Belgium are GSD. I highly doubt that. Not saying you are wrong, You live there, I don't. I just find that very, very hard to believe.

Mystere---Thanks for clearing up my mistake in governing bodies

The only events i attend is the Sch side , never saw a Belgian Ring event so that i cannot comment on, As to Sch competitions there are very few Mal's in them the most i have ever seen in one competition is three Mal's, mostly there are none, I still find these dogs interesting though, they give me the impression of being keen to please, but at times a little skittish, or wayward, they give me the impression that they lose concentration quicker than the Shepherd does
Last Sunday morning our training club is 300yards from the Police Dog Training establishment, and i stopped and watched the Police Dogs working outside they were only doing Obed at the time, i only saw two Mal's there from around 12 Dogs,
I may be wrong with the percentage of Mal's to G.S Dogs but i do know when i went over to Belgium in the 1980's around 20 times, i never saw one Mal working, Where i live is in the country side 8 kms from the City which is the smallest City in Belgium so we never see a Police Dog there, In the city itself i have only seen two Police Dogs in four years both G.S. in the big cities like Antwerp and Brussels it may be different now, but not years ago it was only G.S Dogs

Not very long ago, we did not see many mals in schutzhund in the US, either. They were primarily in French Ring. In fact, I know of comeptitors who switched to mals ten years or so ago BECAUSE there were so few mals in sch, it made it easier to qualify for competition at the FCI with a mal, than with a gsd.

That changed over the years, as people saw the quickness, among other things, of the mals. Ivan B., Gary dHue and Kelley Martin were just about the only mal handlers people saw at national events. Then, Al Banuelos came along and got a 100 score at the 98 USA Nationals in Denver and the following year scored perfect 100 point routines in OB and Protection in Reno...with a mal. Suddenly, everybody and his brother and first cousins were getting mals for schutzhund and the game was on.

Now, you don't get a "little red dog" because there is less competition in schutzhund with them. If anything, you get out of them, because the competition is so stiff! :-)

Sue, ¶

I was in Reno for that performance. Mid-way through the OB, the whole audience realized that we were seeing a perfect routine. I remember the stadium going quiet when we realized it. I can't the link you posted, so I hope people who can look carefully at the other handler in the blind for the long down. When the stadium went quiet, he peeked out of the blind to see what happened. :-)
When the judge announced the score, the place went nuts! Adrian Ledda was among those filming the whole thing. He claimed that he was just videoing me screaming about the score. :-) Honestly, the stadium was on a block with the police stadium. I still cannot believe that the cops didn't come to see what all that screaming was about, especially as it went on for a long, long time.

About 30 minutes later, the screaming began again, when that 100 point protection score was announced.

There is not a doubt in my mind that that experience was part of the reason USA later limited the USA Nationals to gsds. :-) Banuelos had titled the first AmBull to, I believe, Sch 3 prior to his spectacular performances with a mal. His mal, and a littermate, were very impressive and bred by Gary d'Hue.

I can only imagine how thrilling it was to be there to witness it live!  I sent you an email with the links so you can watch them if you want.  I don't know why they won't work here.
