In other words, the whole question of the Service dog is not only a question of the dog, but quite as much if not more so, a question of the fitness of the leader."

I like this statment, very smart and well thought through. And I don't agree it's easier to train WL, because it takes a lot of experience to handle them.

Snajper... I think you'll find that there are quite a few fairly inexperienced handlers with W/L dogs... we have them here too.  A smart, keen dog can take an inept handler a long way.

Yada,Yada,Yada........ so tiring.....
At what point will you understand, that each dog, whether workingline or showline, has to be assesed for what kind of work it will be suitible ?
There are workinline dogs that are not capabale of working the streets, just as much as there are showlines not capabile working the streets.
At what point will we admit, that it is of much more importance to asset each single dog of his capabilitys, rather then divide this awsome breed into 2 seperate ones ??
I breed socalled showlines, but I would be ashamed if they would not be able to work. The same should work for workline breeders, they should strive to have a good confirmations beside the ability to work. Our Shepherd should be as versitile as it gets, that goal should be in all of our minds.

Your post is sensible... well, it makes sense to me... why ruin it with the first line?

Really 4pack?  Good for you, if so!

The difference between the show line breeders and working line breeders is their selection criteria. Working line breeders select first for temperment and trainability while the show line breeders selct first for anotomics and color. So for sure, you could expect to get a higher percentage of dogs that are more trainable in working lines.

The experiment I would like to conduct would be how many genrations would it take to get good working dogs from pure show line stock. Here is how it might go; first you get a couple of nice show line bitches with average show line workablility. Get a nice show line male and breed them together. From the puppies only select the ones that show the most promising working abilities. Repeat, repeat and repeat again. I wonder how many generations until you would get consistent good working dogs.

My theory is that show line dogs could be good working dogs if they started selecting for working qualities, but then they would not be show dogs.

quotes: And I don't agree it's easier to train WL, because it takes a lot of experience to handle them.

Not always...my first dog came from hungary and was a very tought W/L (100% working).  He was crazy about everything..protection-tracking-obedience..he just loved to do anything. He was tought on my nerves..but he was easy to train because he always wanted more..always eager to learn new things.  He had it in is blood!

Lots of trainer told me I shouldn't kept that dog cause he was too hot..bunch of idiots!!  They wanted him for them..But I have learned how to handle a strong dog..We were a great team..

Not all working dogs a nuts and can't be handle by someone who is new to the sport..Of course you need good people around you to teach you, you need good decoy who can train the dog correctly..and you need some basic skills as a trainer..not everybody should train dogs..some just don't have it period..

Missbeeb,

it is what it is......... a stupid way to water down our breed......just as much as you stick to your own standart........there are workingline dogs that can do the trick, just as much as there are show line dogs that can do the trick ....... just as simple as that.

Major thing is the assesment of the dog, period.

July, you said you don't agree but concluded that you learned to handle your dog, so it boiled down to experience lol. :)
