This song was written to combat Duran Duran's 'A View To A Kill', their bid for the James Bond theme song.
When Eurythmics didn't win that bid (something practically unheard of in the 1980's), they decided to blow open the whole Bond thing by changing a line or two of the original, thus creating a song that highlights how ignorance of the suffering of certain societies is rampant, and that people are completely happy not knowing of the starvation, abuse and neglect that goes on in the world.
