Ontario's groundhog, Wiarton Willie, actually did kick the bucket one year, and they had a fancy funeral for him.
It turned out the groundhog in the casket was a stand-in, as there wasn't much left of poor Willie by the time they found his remains...
I often wonder how they managed to come up with a stuffed albino groundhog for the funeral. They are pretty rare.
So, we've had two thaws in the past 2 1/2 weeks, and my roof started leaking. That meant I had to recruit help to shovel it off. I was up there myself a couple of times, too. After four sessions with four different crews, and $160 in hard-earned cash, it was snow free, and the leak stopped. The last session involved chipping away a 3 to 4 inch thick layer of ice with a pickaxe. We sent large chunks of ice sliding into the dog yard, where Ranger and Star were enjoying the above freezing weather.
Now, as I've told you, Ranger is my rock hound. He loves to chew on rocks, and his teeth are worn to the gums in spots from this habit. He couldn't resist those big chunks of ice. They are the closest thing to rocks he's seen since November!
He grabbed one, and played with it and chewed on it for over an hour! It made his gums bleed, but he didn't care, he was having way too much fun!
He's still got a lot of spunk for a 12 year old!
More snow yesterday. I have the supporting column for a bird bath sticking up out of the lawn, close to my small ornamental pond. I use it as my snow depth gauge. The level is now back up to where it was before the 2 recent thaws, with only about 3" of the column showing. And you should see the dog yard, after we shoveled the roof! The piles of snow are so high that the dogs can look me eye to eye when they look in the window! God knows what is going to happen when that all starts to melt!!

Sunsilver, so Wiarton Willie got a proper funeral, good for him. LOL
Now that overgrown rodent in PA deserves to be creamated, and we'll just blame "Global Warming" for his demise...put the flags at half mast and start the spring thaw...

Overheard at school after a 2 day 'snow break':
First student: My mom said I was going to school today, snow or not!
Second student: My mom said I was going, SCHOOL or not!
