Sunny, explain how one would obtain a radiograph of this view and have the side marked with the 'L' truly be the left side of the dog? To get this view, the dog needs to be on its back on the x-ray table, so what is marked as the left side is truly the right side of the animal...

Your comments weren't wrong...I believe the marker is.

Looks like all the markers are wrong ?!?

That's what I'm thinking, too, Susie.

Yes, I was wondering about that 'L' on the hip plate, too ! [Thought maybe I was being dim / uninformed about some new radiographics practice !].  I don't try to "read" 'em, but I do study them when people put them up here.

Yes, Suzie, the elbow markers are wrong, too!

Here you go The link below will help you to learn how your vet should position the dog. Do not pay for bad xrays.  The main(but not the only one)  problem with the OP hip x ray is that the patella/kneecap on the right leg ( for some odd reason marked as "L") is totally tweaked outward - that makes the hip look worse.

Between the positioning and the mislabeling, I'm wondering if these shots were even taken by a vet in the first place...

Thanks for the helpful info everyone! I think the "L" on the hip x ray is a mistake - I'll clarify with the vet.

Just FYI, I sent the hip x ray to OFA just to ask if it was good enough for them to evaluate. Got a response from a Dr. there (don't remember his name) that it wasn't perfect, but adequate to evaluate. He said he would give a "fair" rating if it was up to him.

OFA will not assume anything they just rate what they see. I would NEVER send this x ray to OFA. Of course, the side which is positioned well ( the one on the right-hand side) is probably fair so better positioning would probably not help.
