GregN, thanks for the international update.  I was hoping the international community was looking forward to this event.  The competitors list is shaping up nicely.

Carlos,  I think you need a bigger boat! LOL

Hi allianz, I doubt the SV and various established schutzhund clubs (undermining as it does their own ambit and authority) will be overly impressed by the idea of individuals running their own shows for profit, whatever the precedent. Still, as a very professional association the SV is hardly one given to knee-jerk reactions, with disciplinary action, if any, presumably well down the line and limited to its own members, including any participating judges. On Tournament’s Web-site I looked for a comprehensive framework of articles/rules similar to those laid down by the clubs - and seeing the event is labeled ‘World’ after all, if not more so since there’s price-money at stake - but alas! (Were I competing I think I’d also like to see relevant amount put into a proper trust bank account.) Also failed to find any detail on the make-up of The 2008 Masters Schutzhund Tournament organization and its Committee. Having one individual putting up the money and also selecting both the competitors and judges isn’t exactly what you’d call at arms-length, but I always was a stickler on detail. Finally, I’m surprised that Carlos isn’t running the event under the auspices of the Alpha K-9 Schutzhund Club. I’m not up these things but suppose it’s a properly constituted club – formal constitution and incorporation etc? Anyone here a member? Ah well, allianz, for what it’s worth, just a few points that sprang to mind.

Pat Relton,

It looks like I won`t get it anyway as nobody is going to answer that question.

It`s OK. Joking again.    I understand that now there are some more serious problems to solve. But I hope for the best.

Hallo Kyle, Please allow reply to your earlier post. Form should indeed follow function. I never said otherwise and further deplored the way we all demands pups/litters sired by the same VA’s per se. Best compliance to the Standard, conformation or structural needs included, is in itself meant to best “keep my shepherd a working dog”. You seem confused on this score. Fashion, fads and other influences distort the situation somewhat but let’s not go there. Where I mentioned bite-work’s adverse impact on public perception you noted its short duration. Quite irrelevant, Kyle; we’re speaking about ‘perception’ here - not truth; the public doesn’t care about such hair-splitting. All that’s needed are the photographs scattered across the Internet of sleeve-snarling GSD’s, teeth bared and all. Of course trainers enjoy schutzhund’s bonding aspects, as I do, but shouldn’t we distinguish between where it’s used as intended, as a tool for improving the quality of breeding, and where it’s pursued it as a separate, distinct sport in its own right and for the most part just a personal ego-trip. (Or as another poster said to me: All about Me, Me, Me!) In regular GSD affairs the dog and Breed have prime place but the ‘sport’ scenario turns this on its head, the animal now mostly only an adjunct to owner’s purported skill and glory, number of tournament wins and celebrity status. One only needs to read this topic to know that much! “The podium is for the handler/owner, us”, you say: I beg to differ. And if this is also your philosophy on the GSD in a more general sense, as for those of like extreme ilk, I suggest you seek out your own forum because as far as I know it’s not what this one was designed for. I’m sorry to say that your closing paragraphs defeat my understanding (I never was too bright).

I have a few questions, some may piss people off but I hope it will help make a difference. One: Mr. Rojas do you think that only TWO Helpers will be enough? What happen if the two you pick get hurt the first day? I think you need back up and if you announced who the two helpers are that will be doing the work, don't you think you should also announce the back ups?

Two: With such a great line up don't you think a better stadium could be used? It's a stadium for children it's not a place to host a great event (a first of our kind in the U.S.) like the one you have put together.

Three: What will the tracking articles look like? Four: Who will be the track layers and how many? Five: Don't you think you should put a picture of the tracking up?

Last but not least, we all heard that Ronny will be showing? What are you waiting on? Put him up!

The helpers are listed and so also is Ronny. He is from the New England region!

Pat, I think he meant Ronny from Belgium. :i-0 Ronny from New England is Roony Burmer, one of the nicest guys in the sport, who made the team with his HOT bitch. The "Famous Ronny" is another person entirely.

Carlos, congratulations!  The concept is awesome and we will gladly attend to spectate, enjoy our  friends and company, and see what we can learn.  Fabulous!

It's great to see all the cackles from all of the underachievers that simply aren't competent or accomplished enough to attend, all throwing stones in envy since they clearly can't attend.  To add another piggysm to the thread, you just can't wrestle with a pig - you get dirty and the pig enjoys it.  Carlos, congrats on showing class to all those detracting from or critizicing your efforts!

I am also especially eager to see awesome people that the SV has either pushed out or not been lucky enough to attract.  Dr. Raiser's attendance is great.  Ivan never has expressed much interest in the SV organization but will attend, and we look forward to seeing Wallace there as well.  Lots of different competitors all with different philosophies...

It's like the x-games but for Schutzhund.  Nice!  It may be fun to videotape it and perhaps invite one of the cable networks to show it.  I wonder how many of the people who often post on this board are competent enough to compete and be invited?  Inquiring minds want to know...

Let your scoring speak for itself - us newbies are looking forward to being motivated!

Cheers!

Yes, holding schutzhund competitions and trials is certainly novel … But do have serious concerns about ones of this kind. In fact, I see profit-motivated events the like of Carlos’s (as assumedly fueled by video sales, attendance fees, advertising income and various sorts of kickbacks) fraught with danger. The spread thereof has the self-evident potential to turn into a major corrupting influence on GSD activities’ present fabric (and as if those manifest in the pup-trade in and similar aren’t ample); including on the spirit of fair competition, and if not where the treatment of dogs is concerned. And if his is a solid financial success why wouldn’t others quickly follow on its heels? It not only works to subvert existing club structures (albeit totally devoid of latter’s transparency or member-agreed regulation, protective measures and accountability) but sees the entrepreneur capitalizing thereon to the extent that such an event necessarily relies for its draw-card on the recognized stature of its participants, in effect relying on it as his main profit-generating springboard. In order to secure high-profile competitors and bolster chances of financial success, for a show without club backing or sanction and for doubtful reward, why would relevant promoter not offer them appropriate financial ‘sweeteners’ up front? (Maybe I’m peculiar but just based on information released so far, there’s simply no way I’d transport myself and dog half-way across the world to attend!) Similarly, in this money-driven setting, why would any well-known judge offer his services for free?
