Don Corleone

by Don Corleone on 09 November 2007 - 16:11

Sorry, I got cut off.  I would definitely check out a SchH club.  Even if you don't want to do protection with the boy, you can do obedience in drive and some tracking.  Even Agility is an excellent outlet.

Ramage

Don,

We are taking him on Saturday to get him evaluated for Schutzhund training. I plan on joining the local club in January after his obedience training. I am looking forward to getting him into Schutzhund training  He has some areas that will need a lot of work, but he is very focused on his handler, so I think we can work out the worst of his issues. I'd love to get him at least to level 1. If we can afford it, maybe beyond!

Almost exclusively excellent west german working lines.  A few DDR dogs -- and some of the best (Ingo, Robby).  The only "weakness" is that the sire and dam and unclear -- what Sch titles do they have, specifically?  The ped just says "schh" which is odd.

Im not too sure you need to be enrolling in obedience from someone other than a schutxhund trainer....it isnt good to put that kind of obedience in him if you are haveing to correct somethings...you use his prey and drive to do the obedience and you correct with drive and prey  not obedience....you better ask first.........

obedience classes are for pets

I am glad that you pointed that out, Luvmidog.  Many times we have people come out to club with older puppies or young adults and they are very proud of the 'obedience' that their dog has learned through classes in the community.  Unfortunately, it almost always results in a long, hard road for them to bring the dog back enough for the schutzhund field.

Ramage, if your dog fires up for his 'protection' test on Saturday and you have a focused, bonded relationship, your dog is ready to move forward with schutzhund training.  Unless you have a local trainer that offers obedience classes that focus on schutzhund obedience, don't waste your time and effort.  It can really come back to haunt you and much of what you have 'trained' will need to be 'untrained' in order for it to be correct for the sport.

Best of luck!!
