What´s wrong with a "prey bite" ?
A lot of very successful police dogs are "prey oriented" only.
The both of you right now behave as if a strong, prey oriented dog is not worth the effort -
but daily routine talks different.

Susie
You retreat from the dog you describe is enough vindication of my " bilological " reason hypothesis.

There is nothing wrong with it at all. Strong Prey/Possession scares me more.

Most dogs are worked in prey and the ones that don't respond to prey bite training are rejected. Not many helpers can work a dog that doesnt go automatically into prey drive.

Susie, to me social means being social around his own, also kids getting a ball etc, now i dont WANT a dog to be social around strangers in all situations, that is the whole purpose of a guard dog versus a companion dog

and nothing wrong with preybite, but we see tons of videos from dogs biting on hidden equipment and even ringo suits and people saying it is civil bitework, it is what it is

Lol...lets corner and backtie a dog and call it civil now. This thread is gold. We should change it's name to "how to convince people your dog is something it isn't."

Mith, I owned, handled, trained and titled this kind of dog - whereas you are afraid of it..

Baerenfang, so why are you that pissed off only because Duke calls a prey bite a prey bite?

All of you try to be "tough handlers, owners", more importantly "breeders" of "real" dogs - but a "real" dog is a dog able to do the job, not more, not less.
The most civil dog is useless in case it's not able to catch the bad guy...
Prey drive, civil drive? Nobody involved cares, only the uneducated pet dog buyers.

A civil, but mentally weak dog is useless, as is a prey driven, but mentally weak dog.
All of this talk about "civil" dogs is a sales pitch, it's always about character, and working ability = the ability to work under pressure.

Duke, that's exactly what I tried to explain - your ( and mine ) interpretation of "social" is way different than the interpretation of the current dog buyer...

by vk4gsd on 22 May 2017 - 20:05

Yeah civil dog is def a pitch to the uneducated.

Also still don't get why people think prey bites can't be civil. If a dog bites a person in prey, a fear bite, a defensive bite or any other bite its a civil bite. Strong prey dogs just happen to be more useful hence why everyone from narcotics to apprehension demands strong prey dogs.
