Oh, cheebus, triodegirl, I sure hope he doesn't haul that poor dog all the way down to FL and then find out he can't find anyplace he can stay that will let him keep Maya. It will be a lot harder on his kids, too, if they bring the dog down there with them only to end up having to give her up anyway.  :(  The shelter situation is SOOOO bad down there, too, as far as over-crowding goes. As someone else pointed out, because the shelters are required, by law, to hold stray dogs for a minimum period of time, kennel space is often so scarce that owner-surrendered dogs are far more likely to be walked right into the euthanasia room as soon as the owner hands the dog over to them...

Depending on which area of FL he is in, there may be a GSD rescue who will take her. In the Tampa area there are at least 2 that will never turn away a healthy GSD and they have a big network of adopters on board. Since this owner reads this board, I would ask him to let us know if he needs helping finding her a PERMANENT home in FL. Also it is not easy to find a rental with a GSD in FL and they are banned in many areas. The kindest thing he could do for this dog is to let the OP give her a forever home.

I'd keep the dog & give it back, but I'm not a republican.

I hope the owner is reading this board. He doesn't believe me. He thinks everyone is trying to get Maya to make money off her. He thinks my boy Trigger is a puppy because he says he found a picture of him on this board and he is just a puppy and why did I say Trigger is 8 yrs old. I got Trigger when he was 2 yrs old so don't even have a puppy picture of him. Can't imagine what picture he was looking at. Trigger will be 9 at the end of the year and weighs over 100 pounds. A puppy?????

Hate to pick on the guy because I'd really like to give Maya a good home but this is why I'm thinking it isn't going to happen. I offered to drive to Milwaukee to meet him or said he was welcome to come to Green Bay. He said he will pray about it.

OK, if Maya's owner is reading this, here's the stark reality:  unless Maya has been trained and exhibited in shows and trials, and has earned working titles and show ratings in those venues, AND she's had her hips & elbows certified as normal and sound by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), AND her pedigree shows every single of her ancestors--mother, father, grandparents, great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, great-great-great grandparents, AND great-great-great-great grandparents--have the same type of working titles and show ratings and clearances on hips & elbows from OFA, unless Maya's credentials meet ALL of these criteria, I can assure you that there is NO MONEY TO BE MADE BY ANYONE off of Maya.  The rehoming fee you established in your original Craigslist ad is a fair amount, and I'm sure that Maya is a sweet and delightful dog who is loving and affectionate and a wonderful family member, but please don't dismiss what would be a wonderful home for your dog as you embark on a new chapter of your life, on the basis of a misbelief that you are going to supplement your income by breeding her and that it will be easy to find a place to rent in FL that will allow you to have Maya stay with you.

triodegirl, I sincerely hope that the prayers of Maya's owner result in him seeing the light that under his present and planned circumstances, Maya is better served by being placed in a 'forever' home with you, as opposed to being taken to FL to an uncertain future.

"...misbelief that you are going to supplement your income by breeding her and that it will be easy to find a place to rent in FL that will allow you to have Maya stay with you."

Yes, when we were relocating and looking at rentals, most of the listings that we found online (that we were interested in) specifically listed GSDs as 'banned' in addition to the Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, and others.  Thankfully, quarters were available and we weren't forced to buy something quickly just to keep our dog with us.

ETA: we weren't looking in FL, but I'd imagine these changes are taking place all over.

As a Floridian, I can promise you most places do not allow GSDs. It's an insurance issue, among other things. We've found that unless we BUY a house, renting with GSDs isn't going to happen. If this guy thinks he can hide her away and the land lord won't find out, he has another thing coming to him. I hope he prays really hard and doesn't resort to lying to land lords.

Also ... make money off of her? She's worth the adoption fee of $125 at best, but Hexe said it better.

by Blitzen on 24 August 2012 - 14:08

This is why I don't read Craig's list looking at the dogs offered there for sale. No matter how good the intention, there is rarely a happy ending for the dog due to the mentality of the people who advertise there. I thought they didn't allow animals for sale anymore?

Triodegirl, stop aggrevating yourself; there are plenty of available GSD's sitting in rescues that need homes. This guy is determined to do what he wants with this dog and nothing anyone says is going the make a dent in his thick skull. Ramage and I both live here and we know the attitude about renting to a family with a GSD, but he's not going to listen. You can't fix stupid - this is a lost cause.

by triodegirl on 24 August 2012 - 16:08

You are right Blitzen, Rampage, Hexe and others. Your comments are helping more than you
know.

What bothers me the most is the owner making me feel like a scumbag for answering his ad when he's the one who put his dog up for sale on Craig's in the first place. I never would have even seen his ad had a friend not called and pointed it out to me.

His ad would have been flagged and deleted here in Green Bay. Not sure why it was allowed in Milwaukee.

I plan to call the owner one last time for Maya's sake to hopefully keep her from ending up in a shelter in Florida. I have planty of room, plenty of food and plenty of love to offer her.  But there's only so much I can do to concince the owner. There are many other GSDs out there looking for the same.

Sounds to me like the owner is looking for more money from *you* and is hoping to play off your interest / concern for the dog to get you to offer him more money.
