It's the same vaccine. It's given to puppies at 6 months and again one year later to give proper immunity to the young dog. After the second vaccination at 16 months, it can be given at three year intervals, but giving it to a adult dog every year is un-necassary.

Question.
What if after the 3 year period you have a titer test done and it comes back that your dog still has a strong immunity. Does anyone know if any place is accepting titers in place of rabies shots provided you get them done annually after the 3 year mark?

I still get mine done b/c it is law. My dogs are all healthy and no one is immunocompromised so really it's not hurting them to vax every 3 years (I just don't like a vet telling me I HAVE to do it yearly so they earn the markup on the vaccine and the charge for the "vaccine exam"). There have been cases of rabies around here albeit rare and not in domestic dogs, but the law is the law and I'd rather not have my dogs confiscated from me.

At this point, no, no state in the USA is accepting titers in lieu of vaccination. Rabies is such a lethal disease that at this point states are going to continue to insist on vaccination.
