james, my post stated specifically what I would do.  Me, myself and I - christianity has nothign to do with it (or lack of) - it's what you yourself decide to do in the case such a situation (pertaining to the OP question topic) presented itself.  In my case, what I said goes.  Disagree or not, if my dog was closer to me than YOU, or anyone else in need of my help - the dog would come first. 

I have a sign in my office "The more people I meet the more I like my dog" or something to that effect.

again, would I pass by the person in dire straights to save the dog?  no.  But would I pass by the dog in dire straights to rescue the stranger?  Probably not.

depends on teh situation and definately IMO it has nothing to do with how christian or not you are or I am not.
