Pharaoh

by Pharaoh on 30 July 2012 - 18:07

My previous shepherds got salmonella and some other bacteria from kibble.  They also could not resist recurrent Giardia infection.

Those were part of the motivation for switching to raw in 1999.

No trouble since.  I spend a bit more on food and a HUGE amount less in vet bills.  I no longer pay for teeth cleaning for the dogs.  My wallet is happier.

Safe food handling techniques apply to raw meat whether you bring it into your house for the dogs or the human family.  I guess you could avoid that by sticking to pre-cooked commercial meals for all.  YUM!!!!

PS.  It is not advisable to kiss your dog on the lips no matter what they eat.

Michele re;PS -would you mind passing that little bit of info onto my dogs. They insist on sneaking them sloppy lip kisses in while I am trying to sleep.

The raw meat I feed my dogs comes from animals I butchered myself. Some times they get the cuts we don't eat, such as shank meat, flank, neck, and brisket. So that meat is prepared for human consumption and " clean". Even if I butcher an animal specifically for the dogs, I is still prepare it as for human food, same cleanliness. Commercial raw pet food..I doubt I'd want to eat it since they butcher downers and already dead, in less than sanitary conditions.
