No one is saying A isn't good enough. Everyone starts in A. The quality is in the score, not the class. I've seen A class people score high 190s and B class handlers barely scrape it out.You have left off the "A class" distinction in a few places, and claimed him as HIT. If the club has a specialty award for "highest scoring dog in the A classes" that would be rather uncommon, I've never been to a trial where they had it, although I do recall seeing it in one or two premiums, but I have NEVER seen it referred to as "HIT A classes".

Hi Windy,

The confusion came from the fact that there is no such thing as HIT "A" dogs ;-) I am sure you meant no disrespect but that for diehard obedience people like myself when you say HIT in means you were the best out of all classes.  It is sort of like going to the a regional championship for SchH and get first place in SchH I and than announce that you are the regional champion when the true regional champion is the top SchH III competitor.  It is a matter of semantics at the end of the day.

Just for edification in AKC obedience "A" means a different thing in all three levels.

For Novice - it is for handlers who have never gotten a CD and dogs that do not have a CD.  Once a dog gets its CD it can be shown in Novice B until it either goes HIT or gets an Open leg.  Once a handler puts a CD on a dog they must show every dog after that in Novice B.

For Open - Dogs can be shown in A or B unless the handler has attained an OTCH on a previous dog and then they must compete in B.  Oftentimes dogs who are working on their CDX but are concerned about stays will enter B since most of those dogs tend to me more solid on out of sight stays.  Also, to get OTCH points and compete for High Combined, you must compete in the B classes.

For Utility - Same as Open for the most part.

Also in Open and Utility B the exercises are scrambled and in the A classes they are the same order all the time.

Good luck at your future shows :-)

Okay, good point, but before your post I have never seen the term "HIT".  So why be so criticizing?  Again, I am here to learn and NOT to represent that I know about anything.  I am trying to do right by my dogs thereby better them and myself.

Okay, thanks for clarification.  I still only ment that I scored in Class A which is what I clearly stated.  I thought that for people knew, that would be clarification enough.

It was very confusing, but glad it is all straight now - and - CONGRATS!

COntinue to have fun with your dog! It should be a sport for BOTH of you and looks like it is.  Best of luck in future.

Ok, I'm confused. I've never done any AKC competitions only SchH.  In AKC OB you can get a check for 1st place?   How much are these checks?  Hmmm, I might switch to AKC stuff if it is economically viable.  If there is good money in this I'll get my 11 year old female out of retirement or take Boomer.  I can put up with the AKC people making fun of my working dogs if there's cash in it.

So can someone fill me in on the size of these cash prizes and where do I sign up?

Anxiously awaiting, maybe all that work will finally pay off.

Hey Slamdunc,

Yes, and you could get a ribbon too and take a photo of it and put it up here on the PDB.  If you worked at it, you could make it out to be more than it really is, instead of talk about the real work you and Boomer did today. LOL

by TessJ10 on 01 April 2010 - 21:04

LOL, don't I wish.  But a lot of clubs are now offering, instead of a trophy, a check.  It might only be a $10 check, or a $10 gas card, when the entry fee was $27, but hey, every little bit helps.  I just got a premium list the other day that offered cash ($10, $25, and I think it was $50 for HIT) prizes for things like 1st place in the class, $10 for highest scoring GSD (or Poodle or Labrador...whatever club members sponsored), Highest Scoring Certified Therapy Dog, Highest Scoring Dog from the Herding Group, etc. etc.

And the AKC people won't make fun of your working dogs; they'll love them.  The AKC obedience people have quite the variety of funny looking dogs, since conformation doesn't mean anything, so although you do see some conformation Champions in the obedience ring, you see a lot of critters who never would cut it in the conformation ring, but they're having a good time in the obedience ring.

NOT saying your dogs are funny-looking, Jim!!

But Tess, were you saying Jim was funny-looking? Boomer is quite handsome.......
