3, hopefully.

You have to show in at least 3, because you need 3 qualifying scores under 3 different judges in order to be awarded an AKC obedience title.  In 2011 this will change to 3 qualifying scores under at least 2 different judges (stupid rule change IMO).  However, it's always been 3 legs, 3 different judges, 3 different days to get an obedience title.

So the least you can do it in is 3 trials, but of course if you don't qualify, then you just keep trying until you do.  I've done all my CDs in 3 trials, but twice had to get a CDX in 4 (darn).  I don't know what the average is, if most people do it in 3, but some take 5, 6, or 7 to get the title.  Doesn't matter, as long as you get the 3 qualifying scores eventually, you'll be awarded the title.  There's no limit on how many times you can try.

" In 2011 this will change to 3 qualifying scores under at least 2 different judges (stupid rule change IMO)."

They are changing this rule to help clubs.  This way, you won't have to hire as many judges if your club holds multi-day events.  Stand along obedience trials are typically break-even or money losers, unless they're superintended by some poor slob in the club (who works his backside off).  Trials held in conjunction with conformation aren't as bad, but it's been my experience that people appreciate stand alone trials since you don't have to deal with noise, blow dryers and hair everywhere from the breed people and brainless conformation barking/yapping dogs (did I say that?).

"My question is, can a dog that has a CD go into A novice classes?"

VomMarischal, one more clarification:  Once a dog gets its CD, it can show for another 60 days in Novice A.  Don't know why you'd want to, but you can.  Of course sometimes people enter, say, 6 shows, in case they don't qualify.  Then they get the title in 3 tries, but since they already spent the money, why not go ahead and show in the others for the experience?  So that happens.

But once you put a CD on a dog, then YOU must from then on show in Novice B:

"Section 1. Novice A Class. The Novice A class shall be for dogs that
have not won the CD title. A handler must own the dog entered or be a
member of the owner’s household or immediate family and may not
have previously handled any dog that has earned an AKC Novice, Open,
or Utility title."

So once you've put one CD on a dog, from then on you enter the Novice B class, even though your dog is a n00b, you are experienced now so you move into the B class for Novice forevermore.

In Open, you can still enter Open A, even though you've previously put a CDX on a dog.  If you've earned an OTCH (Obedience Trial Championship) on a dog, then you have to always enter Open B, but otherwise, every CDX dog you can put in Open A if you want.

For anyone who doesn't want to dig around on AKC's site, here's the link to the current Rules & Regulations for all things Obedience and Rally:

So if a dog entered 3 shows and got its CD, wouldn't the owner brag about THAT? THAT would be a nice accomplishment, much more than a ribbon for high in A class? What am I misunderstanding?

The reason the name was changed is becoming clear.  All of the comments will stay with that pedigree, which has been washed.  There is no information on the pedigree, other than a small picture and the "new" name.  The original pedigree is being rebuilt, sans picture, titles and comments.  At some point, after this has all died down, I'm sure the picture and titles will reappear, but the comments won't, they'll remain on the "empty" ped.  Kind of the same mentality as editing threads and putting pictures in place of words.  Then all evidence is gone and everybody else can be called liars.  Shall we listen to another version of "The Twist"?

Yeah, I'm ashamed!

Oh, no, HIT A Classes is a special award and IMO I'd brag about it, too.  Wouldn't claim it was HIT "overall for the day," but I think special awards are fun.  Getting the title is great, sure, but IN ADDITION, to win something beyond that makes the day extra special.  The cool thing about obedience is many people can qualify each time, so even if you don't place in the class, you still "win" because you earned a leg towards your title.

I think it's really fun when shows offer prizes (even if little prizes) for "Highest Scoring German Shepherd Dog," "Highest Scoring Dog from the Herding Group," "Highest Scoring Certified Therapy Dog," and other special prizes.   So maybe you didn't get that 198 score that darn Sheltie got (LOL), and you weren't in the top 4 ribbon placements, but you still won High Scoring GSD that day.  Adds a little extra fun to getting your qualifying score.  And High Scoring of all the A dogs is cool, because that means that you beat all the A's - Novice, Open, and Utility.  So, yeah, something to be proud of.  It doesn't matter if you were the only dog in A's who qualified that day - actually, that almost makes it better, because you were the only one of all the entries who was good enough to get it right while all around you failed on that day.  Well, maybe not better.  Actually, I like it better when I win in a tough battle with good dogs, not because of a heartbreaking "miss" a competitor had by blowing maybe one part of one exercise.  But either way, I'd be proud!

They certainly did make a big splashy ribbon of it! Still, I think I'd be more thrilled about completing my CD. A CD means you get to add a title to your page!
