LAVK-9

Yes Red Sable that would be a better charge but they probably will only get a kick in the ass. I trained a dog once that was a Rott...a HUGE one. He was seriously aggressive when he was asked to do something. He would do it a few times and then if I asked one more time he would go after me. He even went after me when I praised him. (no wonder why the other trainer passed him off to me) Well I worked him with my boss with a muzzle. This dog just wasn't right in the head. We ended up telling the people that he isn't the family type pet and didn't see him ever being that way. So the people came to pick him up...a Mexican family. They were all pretty short and there was a 5 year old boy. My boss asked if he was happy to get the dog back. The kid said no and started crying. He was terrified of that dog(with good reason) I felt so bad and was afraid one day I would hear that the poor kid was mauled. People REALLY need to take responsibility and not think that dogs are as sweet as the ones in the movies!!  Life isn't a Disney movie!!

Oh and wlpool- there are some good stories. There was one not too long ago about a Golden Retriever saving a kid from a mountain lion and almost died. The media like the bad though...it gets more hype.

PRESA Canario was involved in the hallway incident, if memory serves me.

That is heartbreaking Lav.   Poor little guy.

These people make me so angry.  I cannot think of a worse way to die for a child or for anyone.  Horrible, and totally preventable.

Unless of course it  is someone elses dog, but the majority seem to be the stupid families dog.

The Presa Canario dog attack killed Diane Whipple, (her family is from CT.) The details about that case are here:

DuvalGSD, I can not believe you said that Rotties are known for attacking kids! I have had many of them, and only my first one was ill tempered, I learned. I raised my kids with them and they had friends over and ruff housed, played tag, 2 daughters in hair pulling fights, Girls Scout meetings, sleep overs, took kids and dogs camping, many a time would have 40 to 50 kids at my home in and out the front door. did I know where my dog was, you betcha, were they put up> no. I had one male that would let all the kids in and never paid attention, until an adult tried to come in. The kids new if you brought your parents leave them in the front yard, I will come let them in, was pretty funny it was like he carded them.

Here is one for behaviour studies.
You take a small child and a young dog, the child uses thier hands in front of them to balance and sit down, the dog looks at this like a invitation to play (a play bow), so the dog nips, the child begins to scream, and the biting for real begins, now practicing a kill as he would a toy that sqeeks.

I also have known some pretty mellow Rotties. I know a Rottie/Chow mix that was rescued by my friend who wanted a badass. Soon after they gave her a nickname: Lethargic. Damn dog is almost immobile most of the time. Unless there is a squirrel stupid enough to trespass. Still, I would never leave a 2 1/2 y o  alone with any dog.

I thought the attack in the hallway was Cane Corso.  But, very similar breeds whatever they are.  I don't trust Rotts either - all "mastiff" breeds and very difficult to read (or trust).    And powerful enough to do serious damage if they did decide to attack.

Honestly, I don't care what breed it is.  YOU DO NOT leave a small child with a dog alone.  Yes, my dogs are good with small children.  Would I leave them alone with a small child? H.... NO!!!

I tell this story to as many people as I can, trying to make them understand not to leave a dog alone with kids. I read this in the book, "THE DOG LISTENER, BY JAN FENNEL"

GSD is laying down by small child coloring, child belongs to friends of the homeowner and visiting. All adults leave the room hear the dog bark the child scream, they run in, and the dog has bitten the child. Next day the friends go over to the owner of the GSD's home and demand he be put down or they will file a law suit. If put down, no action will be taken, after all they were friends and did not want to harm them, but felt the dog was unsafe. so they take their loved pet to the vet and ask for him to be put down, the vet argues he knows this dog and does not want to do it, this dog did not bite without a reason. The owners cry and expalin they can not afford to be sued. So the vet agrees under one condition, he can do an acropsy (sp). The vet found 2 crayons stuffed way deep into the dogs ear cannel.

This story seems to stick with people, better than do not leave your dog, whom you trust, with your children alone. Kids and Dogs do stupid stuff, better to secure both of them.

Such a sad story for all involved.  I hope that the dog owners made the parents of the child aware of her actions.
