COGSD, if you read the backs of the packets of commercial foods there will generally be a panel underneath the one listing Ingredients, that is titled "Constitutional Analysis" or "Analytical Constituents" or some such. This lists the percentage of the food which is protein(s), fats, ash etc, etc.  Anything over 28% would normally be regarded as quite high and most suitable for very active, hard-working dogs;  if you can get below 24% you are in the right ball park.  For example, my very old and sedentary bitch is currently on 25% but it is a 'senior' food and there is a lot else that I like about it, so I'm happy to keep her on it.

There are also value for money comparative websites where they include descriptions of the contents of a wide range of available kibbles, and prices; many of these list info. on the ingredients and their analysis.  Sorry I don't have links to these saved, but I'm sure others can help, or 'Google is your friend'. :-)

I think around 22-24% is a good level for growing puppies up to about 2 years old; higher than that you get a lot of excess energy they need to work/run off. I don't care for the really high protein foods, and can contribute to joint soreness/lameness for youngsters. Or if you are going to feed raw that is usually around 17-20%.

My boy had a couple of bouts of pano at different times, different legs. JFYI. Nan
