So happy for you!!

by AnnikasMom on 16 April 2007 - 15:04

Well Annika is doing ok, not great and not terrible. She had a rough day yesterday, VERY thirsty but not much of an appetite. Seems a little brighter today but I have to be honest she is a very sick girl, I just don't know that we are going to get her through this. We won't give up until she tells us differently. Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers!!

Darlene,

I'm sorry you are going through all of this. Especially for such an extended time.  I want to go into "fix it and make it better" mode: take some time for yourself, take vitamins to replenish the nutrients stress is stripping your body of, etc..  But, I know that is so much easier said than done.  Please know that I feel so bad this is happening.

Hang in there and try to take care of yourself,

Dawg

The steroids will cause her to drink and urinate more and should perk up her appetite. Don't give up on her yet - keep the faith, miracles do happen.

No change this morning, still no appetite... I did add some Nupro Electrolytes to her water and force fed her about 1/4 cup of cottage cheese. I think I will try using some Super Fuel mixed with some warm water and see if she will lap that up. Need to get some nutrition in her any way I can and I would prefer not having to shove it down her throat. We are checking to see if UCDavis will do a consult of her records, maybe a few set of eyes will see something we have missed. I know I am grasping at straws but she hasn't given me the look yet...

I am thinking positive thoughts for you and Annika. It easy to tell she is very special to you.

AnnikasMom, I can only imagine how hard this must be for you! {{{HUGS}}} You are in my prayers.

Have you tried canned food? I know it's 'bad' for them - but it's full of calories, sugar and protein - and usually dogs will eat it when they won't eat kibble or raw. Get the meatiest canned food available. If necessary, you can even give her meat-based baby food, if she needs something liquid - or stick the canned food in the blender. I've put weight on sick/skinny dogs before with canned food as the only thing that works - and with elderly dogs whose appetites and teeth are not what they used to be. Make sure also that you are not adding any meds to her food - some dogs will refuse to eat if they think meds are in there. Give the meds separate. molly

I'll just throw this out there. Goats milk is extremely rich and available in most super markets now. It's been used to raise pups so may help?

I use goats milk to wean puppies, it might work for her! I would blend some kibble and then add the goats milk.
