Wasn't there a lady (I think from England) who would train dogs by blowing in their face? I remember her being on the old Carson Tonight show a number of times. She might have even written a few books. Can't recall her name, though. Not sure I would try blowing in the face of a dog I didn't know, but I've tried it on my own dogs. My female just looks at me like I'm nuts. The male loves it. He immediately rolls on his back and flashes his teeth in a big grin. This morning I blew in his face a few more times after he was on his back and I had a 100 lb dog trying to climb on top of my head.

LOL prime example of why you don't mess with a dog like that, unless you know what the hell you are doing. Casaer is going to get someones face bit off, why do you think the disclaimer is there? Putting it on TV for anyone including children to watch and imulate is probably not a good idea in my book, neither is Jackass, but it's still funny to watch for a good laugh.

Sunsilver, Nice example that you shared. I do have to respecfully but strongly disagree that "any training is better than no training." I have had to fix too many problems created by "professional trainers" to agree with you here. It is really a sad thing when you see a dog who's spirit was been damaged by poor training. I'm not just talking about abusive training. A dog can be just as broken when they are continually attempting to understand what they are supposed to do but never can. They can be just as emotionally damaged as the abused dog sometimes more so. Then you have to trainers that just can't read a dog and can create an unsafe animal.

triodegirl, I think you are talking about the late Barbara Woodhouse (No Bad Dogs). I don't recall her using that technique with her dogs (she had Great Danes, so she knew how to handle dogs other than lap dogs!) She also used her tone of voice to let the dogs know when they were being praised or scolded. But it's a fact that horses and cattle use that as a greeting They breath on each other to get the other animal's scent, the equine version of the doggie nose and crotch sniff. I think it's not such a bad idea, as long as you're not dealing with a high-strung stud that's liable to rip your face off...

I have seen, first the hand the results of someone with an unstable dog, who watched the "whisperer" and thought an Alpha roll was what the dog needed. Many stitches later and the euthanization of the dog, they wish they hadn't watched the whisperer. I think for the average pet owner, who has a stable lab, the whisperer isn't too dangerous. However, with certain breeds, what the whisperer does is HIGHLY dangerous to the dog and the handler. Sometimes a little bit of knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge at all.

Exacalacaly! I did used to blow in my horses nose, I have had dogs that will bite your face if you blow on them.

Get A Real Dog: I think I get your objections, kind of like the old saying, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing." I definately know pssst isn't working for me, ha! it's more like EHHh! and a zillion NO bites! I've gone through bottles of the Bitter Apples, used it on my 6 yr old, too. My prior black pup gave me that same look from the Steinbeck quote, with the whites of his eyeballs just gleaming. As soon as I confidently released my calm, submissive dog (and my fingers under his chin ) with him on his side, well, I turned to walk away and he up and goosed me in the butt! lol I knew then that this dog wasn't having any of that! What I do think has helped me is the point he makes about when NOT to give affection. I can see now, I had contributed to some unwanted behaviors by doing this. ~Deb

Sometimes I'm amused by what he does. But I really have to say that I am sooooo sick of hearing that "PSSST" sound EVERYWHERE there are pet owners trying their hand in any form of obedience. I swear!!...everytime I walk into a pet store, I hear "PSSST" "PSSST"....

Uhhh, Deeswolf? I think maybe we said the same thing?!? Well, almost...~Deb
