When he first started his show, he stated he does not train dogs. Only changes behaviour. (he has since changed that one) Without the training in obedince on the dog, you are always going to be at odds. Also to many people think they get it, that is very dangerous, he takes a Alpha Dog out of his enviroment gives some behaviour modifcation and then takes it home and in a short time the dog bites the owner or family member. The typical pet home, think they understand, I have seen strangers in campgrounds try and correct dangerous behaviour in their friends dogs, and give lessons to owners. Watching the dog, you know they are about 2 minutes from a challange and a bite. A few lessons and an explanation, does not make a dog handler. He is great for the "lap dogs" who are to spoiled. GetaRealdog, is right, the be all/end all starts with obedince training, for both the owner nd the dog.

I would MUCH rather see the general public watching the "Dog Whisperer" t.v. program than not. It's a better thing to have a t.v. show like this one available to the public than having them watch the AKC Dog Show repeats over and over, thinking that is all there is to life with a dog is parading around in a showring and if your dog is not "show quality" and a "pure bred" that your dog is doomed for life to the couch. I've seen many of the Whisperer shows that I wish I could send to Joe Blow here or Jane Doe there to watch. Things on his show like having the dog wear backpacks and be doing a job, and teaching the pet owner that they CAN get their dog to stay off their bed, and that, Yes, you DO need to get that dog out of the house and walk or excersie them etc is more of what the public NEEDS to see. Yes, he has his own methods of course, don't we all, but he does define the difference between be coming "Leader of the Pack" and formal dog obedience. So, all in all, IMO, there should air his programs and I'm actually excited that Animal Planet is soon to air their 2 new t.v. shows in Mid April. One on obedience training and another dog show aimed toward the general public on life with their dog. I don't think the "dog whisperer" show can do the public any harm.....you go Ceasar SBB

Is The "Don" really Ceaser in hiding...??? Jes thinking outloud is all... JMO but the Dog Whisperer does more good than bad, people should read the disclaimer he runs at the start of every show...I know we enjoy watching and have learned a few things here and there... When was the last time anybody walked into a pack of 30+ big dogs and wasn't intimidated...???If ever, give the guy some credit...Now if only he made housecalls... Rob

robo, I used to care for a rescue organization, "if thats what you could call it" dogs. 20+ GSD's and GSD mixes. The whole time I was volunteering,"over a year" we even had a wolf Hybred in the pack. All on an acre fenced with 12 foot chain link, with curb poored around so no one could escape. It even had a safety entrance, so dogs could not push their way out, when someone entered the "yard". It didn't take me long to figure, "this was not a good idea". I fed, watered, brushed, walked and tended to all of these dogs myself twice a day. I broke up a couple of fights. I was never affraid for myself, but always for the dogs as we all know the bottom dog gets his ass kicked by all dogs that feel the need to jump in on a fight. One day I watched my favorite male, Zorro have his ear ripped off when he stood his ground to a older, not so stable male GSD. Just because they don't show the nasty parts on Television, doesn't mean they arent happening. This is probably why Cesaer doesn't use prongs or e-collars much on the show. Oh God what the public would think! Do they really think PSSST! Is going to solve it all? If the general public needs to be shown how to walk their dogs for excersize, kick the dog off the bed, and that OB is a good idea, maybe dogs should come with an instruction manual. I don't think a half hour cut and produces show is going to cut it.

4pack, Yes most of what you say is true, and of course they only show what they want you to see on the TV...Truth is most people don't deserve to have a dog let alone read and follow the instructions you speak of... If Ceasar can somehow get any information across to the masses thats a good thing, as i said before most people don't have a clue and truth is in many cases its people who need to be trained not the dogs...A dog is a dog is a dog and will always act like a dog, its up to the dogs care takers to provide an environment within which a dog can thrive and be healthy as well as something socially acceptable to others...Dogs don't come with bad habits, people allow them to develope most of the things that bother someone with a well behaved dog... GSDs looking the way they do do intimidate most non GSD people which is why we must socialize them... I have lots to say but duty calls... Rob

Why get all worked up with Ceaser? He is not on your training field, nor are the weak minded owners that he helps on his show. The guy does not bill himself as a working dog specialist either. He spends his time on TV showing most owners that living in fear of a 2lb dog is their fault. I would like to see him work with an old school, undiluted, bite first and ask questions later, Czech dog, that is genetically programmed to lay someone out. Especially if the owner was a first timer and bought the dog to satisfy their ego of owning a "Protection" dog.

I haven't watched the show, but any training is better than no training. I think I can understand why he deliberately provokes alpha dogs, though: 1) it makes for exciting TV 2) it gives the owners an idea of how to handle a 'worst case' scenario. Okay, maybe not the RIGHT idea, but what can you show in 30 minutes? The correct way takes too long to explain, and would probably bore the average listener so much they'd flip channels. This is the day of the 2 minute sound byte, guys. Forget about 'in depth'. One of my friends had a Hungarian Puli which scared the crap out of me a couple of times. One day it jumped up in my lap and just tried to stare me down. I didn't touch it for fear it would try to latch onto my face. He also would challenge you as you tried to leave the house. She absolutely refused to lay a hand on it to discipline it. I SO wanted to kick its little butt! He ran that house, and his body language showed he KNEW it! Eventually, when she had to move in with her daughter and kids, she gave it to another friend, who had no idea how to handle an alpha, spoiled rotten lap dog. (Gee, wonder why the daughter didn't want it around? Thank GOD, at least she knew the dog was dangerous!) I tried to teach my friend how to handle him, and when the dog challenged me as I was leaving the house, I put a steel mesh glove on over a heavy padded work glove, and tried to put it down. It ripped the glove off my hand and shook it like it was killing a rat. (I didn't know a heck of a lot about training back then...) I was very much relieved when the dog developed a bad case of mange, and was euthanized.
