Yeah, I always preferred walking them into a Stack if the dog would oblige. Dogs being individuals, some are more compliant than others. It doesn't give quite the sharper outline that actual placement by the handler can achieve, so there is the temptation to fuss more with the dog when in competition with others ! Have always found it better to get the back feet placed before the front ones, but each to his or her own; I have seen many handlers start with the placement of the front half. I think what is more important is to make sure the dogs understand what you want and that you'd like them to stand still for a few minutes.

Our grand "compromise" is my dog is allowed to wag her tail if she absolutely positively can't "stand still"

She knows phooey and understands the concept of "wiggle," but sometimes it's a little much LOL

Thanks for posting about back first. I feel a lot better because I thought how I had to get it done was wrong/stupid/inept on my part.

Cat, I d k that anyone has ever invented a 'Rule Book' for it, lol. But I've only ever been an occasional Handler, at least as far as the Show ring goes - I've 'stacked' more dogs NOT on Showgrounds than on them. As far as I've ever observed at Shows, clubs and other peoples' kennels etc, you go with whichever method is comfortable for you. If the 'pro' handlers anywhere have conventions about it, I haven't noticed.

Can't think of any physical / construction reason that's been argued for doing it one way rather than the other.

PS Love the compromise ! You could take her to Companion Shows and compete for "Waggiest Tail" ;-)

The dog's "don't wigglle""stop wiggling" "phooey wiggling" tail wag is usually just the end.

\My dog and I learned a lot at the match shows we did on our first (and only) shows (2 in one day at the same location), but it just wasn't for us. Maybe because she was in her first heat on the absolute messiset day LOL I remember people here were so helpful before we went

I M O what is also nice about Showing in the UK, and this does not seem to have been covered anywhere in this exchange (all 3 threds) is something that, reportedly, does not happen much in the US: breeder of S/L pup gets new owner involved, attends same shows, encourages. That is magic for stopping people dropping out after their first experiences. Can't tell you how many times I have known that to happen. Of course, we rely less on Imports and our geography is much smaller, but still I'd wish that the newbies got more such help after breeders have pocketed the money. Sorry if I'm maligning some American breeders but this is the distinct impression I get, having heard posters bemoaning lack of support & involvement generally among 'the Fancy'.
