So, I was stopped by a by-law officer for having Senta off-leash in the school yard near my house (school was closed for the day). We were working on off-leash heeling and a long down stay. In my city, the by-law is that dogs can't ever be off-leash unless your yard is fenced or you use a dog park (too dangerous- dog fights there are unreal).  No one on my side of the street has a fenced yard (very unusual for a 1920's neighbourhood).

Up until recently, the school hasn't had an issue with folks using their yard to exercise their dogs when the school was closed provided that folks cleaned up after their dogs. People stopped being responsible so the school will no longer allow people to use their yard and asked the city to fine all dog owners found using the yard. I sure wish the school had posted a new sign (old sign is still there just telling you to pick up after your dog).

The by-law officer didn't fine me since I was very polite, Senta was wearing her license and rabies tag, and she wasn't a "dangerous dog". I sure see the worth in teaching Senta to stand for exam now! Apparently, the fine is $125 (off-leash) and this fine increases exponentially with no license/rabies tags. Having no place to let Senta off-leash makes it difficult to exercise and train her so we decided to sell our house and move to the country (seeing a house on Saturday). My husband feels that my being stopped by the by-law officer is the best thing that happened EVER. He hates living downtown (well, in town at all) but I'll miss our house. After 6 years, we finally finished all the renovations (it was a mess when we bought it) and I LOVE my kitchen.

laura - Will you just use a super long, long line?  That way she is "technically" on leash?

Laura....go to the country!!! I agree w/ your husband...I always been a city girl, I grew up in a sky scraper on 9th floor.....lived in apartments, townhomes...so, i never thought i would say that but ....cities are changing, low lives and poor excuses of human beings are everywhere...if i can sell my house (market sucks...6 months on the market) I would buy 3 acres and a house out in the middle of nowhere, where idiots can't walk to and if they make it that far I would have plenty of room to bury bodies..LOL.....I would get 3 more dogs...and have my own shooting/target range on my property...:) LOL..
all wishful thinking aside...

I wish you good luck and all the best... :)

@Ace - I asked about that since I have a long line for training. The city requires a leash to be under 8 ft long (so folks using those long, retractable leashes are at risk of being fined). I saw the by-law officer driving around my neighbourhood today so the risk of being fined is real (at least for now, during the "crackdown" period). It's going to be a real pain to exercise Senta until we move (she's nutso if she doesn't get enough exercise).

@LF - Yeah the idiots stay away b/c the mass murders and serial killers go outt here to mutilate and kill people out there so no one hears them scream and they can torture them for weeks.

@Laura - Damn that sucks.  I hope you find another spot to train at.  Dress like a police officer and see if you can get away with it.  You know, khaki pants, nice dark blue polo shirt and some aviator sunglasses.  If they ask..and your nervous about being busted then say your training to sell to a law enforcement agency.

Ace...Our home sits on 10 acres and we have 100 acres of corn surrounding our property. Never have I been afraid....: )

Serial killers are too scared to venture up our 400 ft drive thought the woods...I couldn't blame them a bit for being scared, folks in the country "pack" quite a punch...Do you smell what I'm stepping in????...lol...: )
