Gem.... whats a 'flying trot?' For me the german shepherd whilst often described as 'a trotting dog' is a powerful walking animal and an effortless, groundcovering, powerful gaiting dog. Re body length... dogs and bitches should be of the correct height to length ratio (I am yet to see a short coupled dog gait effectively compared to a more correct shepherd - the same is true of a 'long' animal) Correct angulations, good gait, etc could be debated all day - my point was that the pictures posted are not all of the shepherd gaiting - opal and orbit are walking! A true mover in full flight is a joy to behold. (and where is this YOKER picture!!?)

Hi Zozolli, you obviously missed the Yoker picture, it was posted on this site a few days ago and was brilliant. You are perfectly correct, orbit & opal are walking in the pictures shown. A GSD is a trotting dog and the effortless gait is otherwise known as an extended trot. I think Gem is just getting confused with the different terms. The Flying Trot he/she refers to I presume is just another way of describing the Extended Gait. Best Regards Sue Belfield

Whats a flying trot? Lasso was the best example recently I've seen, of the flying trot. the long shepherd without the under reach toward the center of balance couldn't make that movement. most shepherds with correct proportions could get up for a short time, it takes a corect coupled shepherd to keep it up around the large ring.

Im still none the wiser - I dont think its a term we use in the UK, certainly I havent seen or heard it here. Are you meaning four paws off the ground - the correct mid gait position?

Hurrah! Thanks Joyce (picture giver extraordinaire) just had a look at Yoker. Beautiful isn't it! As I said, 'a true mover in full flight is a joy to behold.'

its a all out movement patterned after the standard bred horse's movement. a fast trot.
