Preston, I think watch the wording. Big difference to me between animal "welfare" groups, and animal "rights activists. Animal welfare groups are actually for animal welfare...animal RIGHTS are where the loonjobs come from.

I used to work at Six Flags animal show. We had several different species of exotic animals there, including many birds of prey etc. (as well as some domestic farm animals etc of course). All of the exotics had been deemed non releasable wildlife...meaning that if released into the wild, they would die. The great horned owl for instance was taken out of the wild by some idiot wanting a pet owl. He fed her only raw hamburger meat, and her wings never developed fully, pretty much imagine only growing your hands to the first knuckle....kind of what her wings were like. She couldn't really fly let alone fend for herself in the wild.

Anyways, I remember we would get the nutjob activists that would come in and start screaming, and ranting to let these animals go. I would try to rationally explain that first, it was not our fault these animals were in captivity but because they had to be, we did everything in our power to make their lives useful (as educational ambassadors) as well as to make their lives as comfortable as possible (through enrichment etc). Mistake number one, you can try to be rational with lunatics, but it never works..... Then I would explain that if we released these animals they would die a slow death. Almost ALWAYS and invariably that would start the constant chants of "better off dead then in a cage". That's the mindset of these animal rights activists. Scary people they are.

last year I was at a pet expo event. I walked around to the vendors at one point and came across the PetPac booth and started to walk up. Suddenly there was a whole lot of yelling going on. This gal came up behind my friend and I, and she had someone else there videotaping her. She started yelling all kinds of nasty insults to the gals in the petpac booth. We're talking insane stuff. Personally insulting stuff like about the ladies there...not even just about petpac. I literally flashed back to my Six Flags days. I had enough of the fighting and turned to her (she came RIGHT up behind me) and asked if we couldnt' act like normal adults and have a normal conversation, and mentioned that she was making herself look VERY badly indeed. Asked if that's how she wanted her position to be perceived. (I of course knew what she was up to, but was trying to diffuse it because it really was horrible). She started into all the reasons why mandatory speuter is wonderful and blah blah blah. When I brought up my points she either wouldn't listen, or turned nutty on me again, stated that there were exceptions and when I pointed out some of the falsehoods about what she was saying she went on about how I must not have read the law (very wrong indeed, I followed the path of that law (AB1634) and read it several times!).When I seemed to "have her" on a couple of points and in front of now growing crowd of people because she was pretty much screaming, she went nutty again and kept trying to personally insult the Petpac gals. It turns out I was talking directly to Judy Mancussi, one of the people that helped write AB1634 as it stood last year. Scary person indeed. And scary that someone like this was instrumental in writing that scary law.

Meanwhile...bump bump bump bump :-)

Here is an excellent FAQ and myth page:

When poor health outcomes were brought up at the Los Angeles City Council Meeting, Judy Mancuso led her supporters in a derisive demonstration. But all those tactics do not obviate the fact that now teaching and research veterinarians at 26 major universities have come out with studies showing the negative effects of early spay and neuter.

Last year my husband testified against AB 1634 at one of the legislative committee hearings at the state capital.  As he was exiting the committee room, he was confronted by Judie Mancuso and several of her followers.  They surrounded and cornered him, and proceeded to hurl angry vile insults at him.  He said nothing, and had not interacted with them at all.  He escaped their little pile on by squeezing through and walking away.

A GSD breeder friend spoke against AB 1634 at another one of the committee hearings at the capital.  After the hearing, she tried to strike up a friendly conversation with a man who was there.  He looked her hard in the eyes, and in a chilling tone said "I'd like to euthanize you".   Not a smart thing to say to a retired police officer in front of a witness.  My friend summoned the Sargeant at Arms, who got the man's identification.  He was none other than the Los Angeles regional coordinator for the "California Healthy Pets" coalition, one of Judie Mancuso's worker bees.

One other thought that struck me is maybe we need to burn up the faxes at the democratic committe offices.  You know the campaign offices.  Maybe if they realized that they are driving the reponsible dog owners away from their national canindates it may serve some impact since this seems to be partisan.  Just a thought

My bad.  Can a moderator please remove the two duplicates I inadvertantly posted?   Thanks.
