This has got to be one of the most disturbing stories of the year. I really pray the New Year brings in some sort of comfort to Hex's family along with it.
I do not buy into this entire Hex was hit by a truck theory. There are way to many unanswered questions about this hit and run for it to be reasonable.
First of all, WHEN did this person that "allegedly" hit Hex develope a conscience and deceide to call the police and or the family and tell them they hit the dog?
Was this a truck or a semi that supposidly did this, a local person or a cross country driver. Did they know that the dog was being sought for his safe return and wanted only to bring closure for a family desperately looking for their dog, OR, the more logical being, they are one of the perpetrators of this crime, and once they see the momentum rolling on finding the whereabouts of this dog-napped dog, and the support of hundreds, and through the donations of thousands of dollars in enlisting the help of even a PI to find out what happened to this beloved dog, they than make a call stating to be a truck driver that accidentally ran the dog over.
Obviously, that was all that was needed to put an end to the police end of the investigation. Although why, I do not know. What I found in looking into this is this bit of law:
If you are involved in a car accident that injures a person or animal or results in damage to another person's property, it is illegal to leave the accident scene without calling police. Such an incident is referred to as hit and run, a crime that can result in serious consequences, ranging from high fines to prison time
Would this not be considered a hit and run accident, or leaving the scene of a property damage claim, being dogs are legally consiered personal property?
Surely the value of the dog on a monetary level would call for a felony charge of property damage.
Yeah, maybe the dog was out of the yard when he got hit (if that is what happened ,which I personally highly doubt), but here in NY, the leash law is only in effect for us out-of-towners, November 15th through April 15th (and that is for the protection of the deer).
I myself have several adult German Shepherds that would not leave my yard to go chasing squirrels, rabbits, etc.,Now if a person appeared at the bottom of my driveway, hell yes, my dogs are going!
And, even if the injuries are consistent with being hit by a truck, who is to say that the coward that this this to the dog, didn't run him over and than dump his body, after a convenient call to the police claiming basicly, an illegal act in it's own right, to stop the search.
I believe this was an intentional, dispicable act done by one or more persons. I hope they are caught!

Take the position of Judge.
Throw blame and guilt at the broken-hearted.
Act and feel as if you are superior to someone who is suffering a grave loss.
Convince yourself it could never happen to you,
fool.

You said " I would not give him a dog of mine without one. Fortunately I decided long ago that I will not have a litter because the biggest problem in all of these super duper dog trainers is that they will not accept responsibility. "
First off you breed and raise showlines(at least accroding to your website that comes up when I clicked on your name) and Al has workingline dogs. So I also do not think that he would get one of your dogs. I by NO MEANS am dissing the showlines as I have an 8.5 year old showline male.
Just because someone has a fense do NOT mean that the dogs cant still get out and/or stolen. Before you jump to conclusions, I do have my 2 dogs in a fensed in yard with a secured kennel for when I am not home.
I have read alot of articles and no where have I seen where it says that Hex was stolen either on or off Al's property. If Hex was stolen, drugged and murdered then I sure hope they catch and fry the bastards that did this. If Hex went off the property and got hit then that is something that could have been prevented. As mentioned above, most people that live on the size of property Al lives on do not have fenses. I am not saying all people.
I too, like most of the people on here, am going to wait until all the reports and lab tests are in and released before I make my final conclusion.
I know Al is devistated for the loss of his furry K9 companion. I am sure the wheels in his head are spinning on what he could have done IF anything to prevent this. This is just truelly a sad situation all the way around and I feel deep sorrow for Hex and the Govednik family!!!!

Thomas,
I, too, raised an eyebrow when the multiple spelling/grammar errors flooded throughout the Sheltie post. Curious which university stole her tuition :) I appreciate the folks that continue to probe for additional information and question the likelihood that this entire accident was anything but that. For pete's sake the Govedniks received the call from the driver within days of the accident and it doesn't appear that Al notified the police of such a call; however, didn't hesitate to pass on the 'psychic's premonition' to request our public officers search this building or that property, my goodness! Imagine for a moment that the family/supporters posted "beloved dog hit by a semi", how many sites would've come about, monies earned, supporters flocking, news interviews conducted, etc.??!! While a tragic loss, quite likely would not have drawn the masses.
Like so many...ready for the published report!

Onyx,
I hope the final report comes before the New Year. More then enough time has passed for all the
toxic reports to have been completed and for the Pathologist to issue a final necrosy and for the PI to close the case and make a final report.

The appropriately-name Doubting Thomas posted:
"Hexe,
Anyone can read the Sheriffs report for themselves and come to their own conclusions. Your conclusions are NOT supported by what is actually in the report. You are guessing on why the case is CLOSED."
Gee, Thomas, you're wrong. I'm not going to waste any energy explaining why, because you simply wouldn't permit any of it to enter your brain anyway.
"Suggesting that the Sheriffs Office is corrupt or incompetent instead of that Al ihas made inconsistant and inaccurate statements to the Sheriff and news media is an insult to everyone in Law Enforcement."
THIS sentence is the only reason I'm bothering to even reply to your post, DT. I wil NOT permit you to make such a statement unchallenged--at NO point in time, in NO post I've made, have I ever so much as INSINUATED that the Sheriff's department or any personnel connected with that department are corrupt, incompetent or anything other than successfully discharging their duties in accordance with the laws, their training, and their responsibilities to the public and the community. NEVER. The members of law enforcement in that area performed with due diligence, and I have at no time made any statement that could be interpreted by anyone with even a rudimentary grasp of the English language as being non-supportive of that personnel and department. Acknowledging that law enforcement EVERYWHERE can only expend a limited amount of time, manpower and resources on any one case is a FACT, and not only are cases at times closed in error based on patently plausible information that supports a conclusion, but people are at time jailed on that basis as well--only to have the cases reopened at a later time when new information comes to light, or witnesses recant statements taken in good faith by law enforcement.
And once again it comes down to wondering why it freakin' bothers you so damn much that the Govedniks want to have every possibility examined before moving past this event. You take this way, way too personally. Should someone be asking where you were that morning at the break of dawn?? Of course not. But your howls of opposition are such that it would make a lesser person wonder where in this is your ox being gored...
I've decided that the issue is a personal one between you and one of the Govedniks, and that you would die rather than say a kind or positive word to or about them, so from this point forward, you cease to exist for my purposes. One of the Govedniks could save your life with a bone marrow or organ transplant, and you'd still figure out a way to spin it so that you could rail against them.
Pfft.
