Yes VM, but there is also a saddle sable.  So, I was wondering if this could be a combination of the two.

GST, The so-called "patterned sable"? I have a puppy turning out that way and would like to know the answer to that as well.
(I was actually previously responding to Yogi but was unclear. Sorry!)

I am changing this threads - name - there is a show me your Bi-color and I saw some M Blanket backs on it - so this thread is dedicated to showing the other color that gets confused with the bi color and every other color....

I  think that alot of people don't know how to categorize this color.   Is there anybody else out there that has more pictures - it does seem that this color is rare.....  Input needed.. more pictures needed so there will be no more confusion....

Yogie, what is the confusion?

Here is a break-down if it helps.

Color choices in GSD are black and tan, sable, bi-color, or black.  These colors are all genetically different.  A melanistic black and tan, or "blanket black" falls under the black and tan, the dog is just expressing more black coverage.

Blankets are not really that rare I don't think.  Not as common as sable, but I've seen plenty in American show lines and working lines.  In German show lines I would say they are rare, as I can only think of one off the top of my head.  My German show line was a blanket until he was a year old (he is very red and very very black) and now has a saddle and mask.  Since the genetics are the same, it is not uncommon for a dog to start as a puppy being a blanket black, then the "saddle" pattern, and possibly even fade quite considerably.

There are two at our club:
Jette vom Eichenluft SchH1

Sam vom Anker Haus SchH3

German show line type dog, Paddy Haus Dexel

WDA Nationals winner Bodo Bodo vom Flutgraben SchH3

The color pattern is not uncommon in my experience.  I have seen blankets out there.   Seems to go along with blacks in the pedigree.
