In dog kibble, bi products and chicken are both inferior to meal because of the water content. If you exclude the amount of water in the ingrediants they might be a lot further down in the ingrediant least if soley based on mass

I found this website a useful place to start in terms of understanding the difference between whole meat and meal.
http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/choosing-dog-food/about-meat-meal/

and a calculation that you can do to take moisture into account when calculating percent protein in kibble or canned food.
http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/choosing-dog-food/dry-matter-basis/

I was surprised that a person commented that beef wasn't good for dogs. My dog doesn't have a problem eating it and I like knowing that the meat comes from cows that my in-laws raise (treated humanely and are fed only what my in-laws grow; same for their chicken eggs). It's another reason that I switched to Acana- I like that they use free-run chickens and are supplied by local farmers. (.... and they are Canadian!)

This thread is supposed to be about Kibbles yet Raw comes back into it,
And here we have someone saying Beef is not good for Dogs another elsewhere says Pork is not good for Dogs, Really funny some Kibbles are Beef so i guess those are no good for Dogs,
So all in all Dogs must like us Humans must cut back on Red meat products for there health just as is practised for Humans
All in All our Dogs are in deep deep Poo Poo. What a load of twaddle is put on here sometimessad

With the utmost respect and good natured humour -

I feel that many threads ultimately end in a discussion of the pros/cons/menus of feeding raw. Shrug- it just shows how passionate people are on this topic. As Steve1 (and other commenters) aptly pointed out- there is a lot of misinformation available so folks need to do research before they feel comfortable in their choice (kibble or raw or both). I feel that I don't have a deep enough understanding of canine nutrition to feel comfortable feeding raw just yet but I'm sure that I'll get there.

laura271...

I feel uncomfortable too in feeding raw only...I just purchased a book that is helping me get a better understanding of the nutritional requirements of my little beast...lol..

I prefer to feed a natural diet that includes fresh whole foods prepared at home so I know what is in it...I also believe kibble is good to assure that any nutrients I missed are getting incorporated in his diet...

It is my opinion that VARIETY is the spice of life....I have been adding canned salmon, cottage cheese, and some yogurt to his kibble over the last few weeks and he loves it...He has a beautiful coat that is just getting shiner all the time....

my beef comment.

im going to clear it up, i said beef is bad for dogs due to i use to give my other shepherd raw beef with kibbles. i switched to raw ground turkey. his weight looked better and coat nicer.

i didnt say it will kill your dog. i said it was bad for him.
due to ground beef being more fatty then ground turkey.

i feed good food, but i have to see how much they weigh how there stool is etc.
so i didnt like the raw beef, so i say its bad.

I've said it before... I've been feeding TOTW almost non-stop since Aug. 2009, rotate formulas every 3-4 mos., and I have been very happy with it.

This is T, http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=123658
at over 10 1/2 yrs old now 6 mos. after major surgery. The photos were taken Sunday evening. He gets TWO cups a day, while little Xena eats about 1/2 cup per day. Their coats are very, very nice, shiney and never dry, their energy levels excellent (my old boy still loves to play). If I were feeding a lesser quality food they'd need twice that much. My younger GSD's did very well on 3 cups/day, even when working and swimming daily. Its more expensive than many popular dry kibbles, but what one pays in cost per bag is made up in the reduced quantity necessary to keep the dogs in top condition. Their coats are so shiny they look wet, reflect the blue skies above. Hard to tell in photos taken at dusk.

I haven't so much as seen a soft stool from even one of my dogs since December 2009, even while traveling cross-country for 2 1/2 weeks.

I love you Xena, but I'm keeping my tennis ball.

Actually Sutter Cemetery is a happening place for joggers, yoga practice, dogs, picnics, kids playing ball... The residents don't seem to mind, nor to the visitors to their graves. Its as much a huge park as it is a cemetery, and a lot of folks' favorite place in town.

http://www.hilarywatson.com/chicken.pdf

This article is informative in explaining why chicken by-product meal is NOT inferior to chicken meal.

If you read carefully, you may think that in some way the former is actually superior.
