I'm in Nebraska, Sunsilver.... right smack dab in the middle of the country. I'd be happy to help with a few hour transports, here and there... but it seems like most of the dogs in need are in southern California and the Alabama/Georgia area.

Well, you're still one heck of a lot closer than I am!
Yes, Ontario borders the Great Lakes, one of which is named after the province. I think the closest border crossing would be Niagara Falls, or maybe Buffalo.
Heh...I just checked it out on Google Earth. I am approximately 2,600 miles from San Diego, and the route Google gave me actually goes THROUGH Nebraska!

Just a note one of the east coast shepherd rescues has/does pull and transport CA dogs . . . . .

I thought it might! Duh, I completely forgot about that Great Lake... Lake Ontario... I feel silly now!
Usually if I see a license plate from Canada it is an Ontario one, which is why I figured it was where it is! So if you can figure a good transport route, you can count me in for a leg. :)

Dont know how the hell they do it- when we tried it was nothing short of a disaster. No fosters, board is expensive and if the dog gets sick, no place for it to go- no one wants to know from the dog! kicked out of boarding, not allowed to stay in vets office..Tiffany died for nothing! Cant do that ever again! Transport is a fortune and the volunteers dont volunteer to transport or answer emails or do anything they are supposed to do :( People who make pledges to help dont honor them and dont want to know once the dog is out of the shelter. Its a recipe for disaster, we learned the hard way, or we would be pulling many from there. Its sad because we have a facility that could probably save many that are being euth in Ca :(

Marjorie,
I would agree if I hadnt seen it done with the Brittney rescue. I had a dog that went to Seattle from Vegas and the transport was filled in a few days. It was really awesome!
