Those bite abscesses can be really serious, so it's great news to hear she's getting better.

by VonIsengard on 22 March 2012 - 18:03
I disagree, it's completely incurable and will keep coming back, the only person who knows what to do is me, so I suggest you send her to me immediately, for her own good.

go to the vet and have it cleand out and then find out WHICH antibiotics are best for this.....

Clavamox, usually, but I too, would go to the vet. These things have a way of festering deep inside. Did you drain it or did it pop naturally? Because of your inexperience in these matters, you might be unawares that all it takes is just an itty bit of bacteria still inside to make it fester all over again. Did you use anything such as peroxide to cleanse the wound when you saw the blood?

Use some BAG BALM on it...3 times a day...Amoxcillan will do....one tab 250 every 6 hours for 5 days will do the charming kid good...and not over powered antibotic. Clean off with white vinegar or apple cidar vinegar before applying the bag balm....he will lick it off probably so keep it on there...if possible
Keep Bag Balm for your bites, swelling also..ONE day I got bit by Gator, GAL CO SO Aprh dog in a fight with Yap and had bites all over me..HAVE used bag balm all my life with all my dogs for all kinds of scrapes and bites and on me too.
I keep all antibiotics on hand also from sulfa drug to Ampicillian to Pennacillin...

On a serious note- I have always soaked my own dog bites in warm water and epsom salt and never got an infection. I started using epson salt compresses for my dogs and the stuff is just amazing. One of most amazing fixes was when a cyst burst on one my girl's backs and it looked horrible. It was a Saturday evening and I didn't want to go the emergency vet for something like that so I cleaned the area and started using the compresses, 20 minutes at a time, 2-3 times a day. By Monday moring it was a small, completely clean little scab, no redness, swelling, nothing.
Probaly not ideal for this, but for your future reference, especially if you ever get bit yourself.
