The ridge is supposedly connected to dermoid sinus, a nasty condition found in the breed, you just check the puppies for it and put down the ones that have it, in UK appointed Ridgeback Club members will check the litter for you and show you how to check yourself.  However, most ridged ridgebacks do not have dermoid sinus and it does appear in ridgeless puppies, I had one with 2 dermoid sinus' that was put down at birth..  I had a couple of ridgeless pups in litters over the years and simply rehomed tham as pets without papers.

 Smaller gene pool definitely requires knowledgeable, careful breeding.  Be aware of this with all rare or unusual breeds.  It's so easy for all the faults to be reproduced.
