The amount of prongs in contact with the dog's neck greatly affects the level of training that a dog receives. There is also a perfect balance of number of prongs and length of chain. Usually the company that makes the prong collar also matters...HS is definitely the top collars out there and I wouldn't touch anything else if you actually want a trained dog. With some dogs, the type of metal used for the prong collar is also very important. Stainless steel, chrome, black stainless steel, or courigan can greatly increase or decrease the rate at which the dog learns. I've had the most success with black stainless steel, I think my dogs like the look and so they enjoy training more and therefore learn quicker.

Mithuna...I don't disagree that the more "prongs" on the dog's neck the better correction you can get...and a better feel on the dog...but you're talking about what percentage of prongs should be on the dog's neck...and there are only a few ways to change the amount of prongs on the dog's neck...1) You can Cut and Reassemble the chain...or 2) buy a different collar which is either larger or smaller...If the one you have doesn't fit properly...

When a dog is not behaving properly, a ''correction'' brings them to the proper behavior. If you do anything like yelling, yanking the leash, pushing the button on the remote training collar, or praying to God, and the dog continues the bad behavoir, he/she was not ''corrected''. I have watched too many handlers use a correction at the wrong time or level and promote the behavior not correct it. That is called stimulating. I believe the OP thinks that there is a magic method of removing an inch of the chain and adding 2 links and.............. training occurs. Seek professional help
