von Kaltbach means "Cold Creek" in German. Since 2002 we were located in the Quinte West Ontario, Canada area on the Cold Creek river. In 2012 we moved back to the USA to Gettysburg Pennsylvania where we continue to breed the true working line German Shepherds. These dogs are well rounded as family companions and protectors and also suitable for all different facets of work. We also breed to the highest standards for health with hips/elbows and were one of the first in North America testing breeding dogs for the Degenerative Myleopathy gene (DM)
Over the years, we have dogs working for police departments in Canada and USA, Mass Transit Authorty NYC, FEMA Urban Search and Rescue and in all kinds of competitive sports from Schutzhund to Scent Work, Tracking and everything in between. We are very proud to have our bloodlines successfully contributing to the breeding program at the Seeing Eye Inc in New Jersey.
When people ask what makes a “working” German Shepherd different- it’s the solid balanced temperament (above all) proven through the ability (drive) to do different types of work- a variety of work not just one field- successfully. While they are bred within the breed standard, a working line breeder will be titling their dogs and not breeding for coat, gait or color as the major important qualities.
And because of this balanced temperament, the working German Shepherd can be a wonderful family companion. Our dogs have a great "off and on switch" and a level of common sense that makes them super companions in play and serious enough to know the difference of true threat if the need arises.
We raise and train our own dogs as well in a variety of fields and find them to be easy to train (eager to please) with lots and lots of drive and natural courage. My specific focus as a handler has been a certified Canine Search Specialist for PATF1 FEMA for the past 20 years. I typically handle and train my own dogs. Anyone familiar with K9 training can tell you there is no comparison in the world to the level of this type of K9 work. I also compete in SchH for fun (CDN Nationals competitor in 2008) and Rally, Disc, Dock Diving, Herding & Therapy dog.
Our dogs are in the house with us as well as kenneled (from time to time) and live on a farm property with Maine Coon cats, Clydesdales, peacocks and chickens.
Please visit our website link and get to know us better if you are considering a working line German Shepherd. We would be glad to talk to you about the working German shepherd overall. There are many different "types" of GSD, Working, German Show Line, American Show line, Shilo, King,... they are ALL different versions or "spin offs" of what the original German Shepherd was designed to be.
We are not a volume breeder and may have only one litter a year so most people who are serious about a puppy do reserve in advance.
You are welcome to visit us at any time and meet all the dogs.
