I've been learning a lot from this thread, but am still really confused.  I thought Sue Ann said fast normal is equal to OFA fair.  Isn't that what it shows as the equivalent on the OFA site?

I had a  fast normal bitch at age 1, who went OFA good at age 6.  Once again, I have never seen a passing score in Germany not also pass with OFA.

Okay, so it that even though on the OFA chart, it says fast-normal is equal to borderline, in reality when grading the same set of x-rays, OFA would likely rate them as Fair and the German "a" stamp program would grade the same x-rays fast-normal?  Man, this stuff is really complex.   This is just one of the many reasons I wouldn't consider myself qualified to breed dogs.  There is just so much to take into consideration when deciding which dogs when bred will produce up to the standard,  to say nothing of improving the breed.

In my experience, each and every dog I've gotten a pass with from Germany : a-normal, a-fast normal and noch zugel, ALL have also passed OFA.  The worst hip score I saw was NZ from a bitch who in later life also got OFA fair.  My fast normals have all gotten goods or fairs.  My a-normals have also gotten goods or fairs.  HD in a dog is generally clear cut.  The various opinions within passing scores varies.

Excuse the newbie question:  when an ad says "hips certified a1 (or a2)" what does that mean?

Thanks

http://www.offa.org/hipgrade.html

This is the link to the OFA page that describes their hip ratings and  a comparison of OFA hip grades to those of other registries such as the SV.  You have to remember that the comparisons are  approximate, not exact.. Just as Sue-Ann's dogs have all received OFA clearances including those rated fast normal and NZ in Germany, other dogs with those ratings will not. I've heard of an NZ in Germany that was rated moderately dysplastic by OFA and another told me that her fast normal got a borderline. She opted to re-xray her dog a year or so later and the dog received a mildly dysplastic rating.  I've also read about some who have had the same results Sue-Ann had - OFA fair on an NZ and a fast normal. There is not a lot of consistency as far as I can tell. IMO Sue-Ann has the right idea. Xray at 12 months and send that to the SV and redo the dog again at 24 months or older for OFA's evaluation.

Yellow Rose, I can show you plenty of pedigrees of other breeds with no borderlines or mildly dysplastics, but it would  probably be  impossible, to find a pedigree on this board without them. You could find GSD's with no borderlines or milds in 4, 5 generations, but they would be American lines. It would be interesting to me to see what would happen in 4, 5 generations if no NZ's or fast normals were used.

I don't have the Don's email address, Yellow Rose, but I t hink I saved that email .

I submitted x-rays to BOTH SV and OFA for three dogs so far:

One got a1/good

One got a4/mild dysplasia

One got a1/fair

I will submit another x-ray to OFA for the “fair” dog – curious about the result. My vet said the hips looked great, so perhaps it was just subjective? We will see

I’m not an expert when it comes to reading x-rays, but can see obviously good hips, or obviously dysplastic. I think in the x-ray above the dog is dysplastic on the right, but not too bad? Hard to tell with poor positioning and small size of the picture.

Here is the x-ray for a1/fair dog - looks tilted to me

Blitzen: Thanks   Ill call him and then send him the email   I have it I just forgot to call him and get it....He probably goes to bed while Im up all night....

I have researched for 8 hours every pedigree from ddr's to top studs in Schutz and all the dogs we all know and all those in all my pedigrees  Every dog line has fast normals in every other dog or so....many in the w 2nd and third generation....=after the 5th many dont have a rating unless you have the germany pedigree....I ask Jantie to tell me where she got that Jeck v Noricum had a HD-3 and she hasnt been back on...I have german pedigrees that state he has    "a" with the Zuerkannt after it....Mandi Haus Hetok who is his son has "a" Zuer----also..

Somewhere there must be a registry with numbers that I dont have knowledge of....Hope someone can show me how to look all this up ...I have pedigrees coming out of my desktop right now ,,looking at all the    fast normals.....got me to looking , thats for sure...I am going to look at Dragon;s Melanie's pedigrees as she states she has tried to cull some of the questionable dogs .......

I noticed a dog with    fast normal today with the name   blitzen ....Magbert vom Blitzen Stein.......I think a Fado son   Ive slept since then.....lol

Thougth of you when I found that.....
