Of  course you can get salmonilla or ecoli from raw chicken   If:

you feed it raw and it has set on counter all day

if it is left out of refridgeration for over one hour

of course , if you let dog eat it off the ground at the park

Yes, if flies get on it in his kennel outside, if he doesnt eat it immediately after you hand it to him, (not at  my house, take hand off before I can let go)

Yes , if you bought chicken at the market that was out of date

Yes, if you didnt freeze it as soon as you  bought it, not let sit in vehicle all day while you went to eat or shop

Yes, we can get the same salmonella if we are not clean and use soap and hot water to clean our counter or cutting board or knife you use to cut it up with...

I get so upset over this issue that people keep bringing up scaring people...Just kindly say   Please be careful how you handle raw meat...it can cause harm if you don't handle and feed properly...Rumors always take the bad side...and raw uncooked bones are plyable and do not splinter....unthaw them first...

I do not us thigh bones     wings, necks, and backs    German shepherds eat too fast and those parts are easier to disentigrate in the system rather than a big thigh bone....use common sense...

I've been feeding raw meats for 30 years and feed raw veggies too and feed veggies to my horses, also...Veggies have bugs and diseases also....so wash and wash the yard eggs off also before you eat or feed the doggies.....

Sunshine:  I would rather trust a chicken from the butcher as we all have survived eating beef and chicken poorly raised in this country, then to feed kibble that has crushed up  dead corcuses , collars, buckles and feet , becks, rotten skin from the dead animal sent to the dog food companies that make the dog food..and all the chemical, not natural vitamins and supplements they have to add and dyes and even BHa and BH and Vit K activity , that are all detramental to my dogs health over a period of time. Along with corn mega amounts that are grown with insecticides.

Our meat is also grown the same similiar way, So any way you throw the dice....It;s another crap shoot.....

Luvmidog, the diseases come from the unsanitary, overcrowded conditions in which chickens are raised and slaughtered. It has NOTHING to do with leaving the meat out on the counter, though that would probably significantly increase the bacteria count already present. Raw meat is contaminated with bacteria. Feces can get splashed on it during processing. Cooking kills the bacteria. Period. End of story.

Most of these harmful bacteria are shed in the dog's feces when it ingests them. Cleaning your work area and hands after handling the meat ain't going to do a damn thing!

And I agree totally with what you said about the size of the bones. Wing, neck, and back bones will probably be dissolved by the dog's stomach acids before they even reach the intestines.

Freezing meat  Sunsilver,   kills the germs and bacteria   Dogs have been fed raw meat for years and years by all german and american breeders with no problems....

Its like eating out,....Some people get sick everytime they go out to certain places to eat...others it doesnt bother....Human have weak digestion systems just like a german shepherd does....I guess it is    the luck of the draw......you hear horror cases all the time about food .....and the same with spider bites that kill people and snakes that kill people and bite a dog and all they do is swell up and look pathetic...

I guess we just do the best we can and hope it turns out the best...I have better results with raw than any other diet....

Yellowrose, I am a registered nurse, so I can speak with some authority on this. Freezing meat kills certain parasites. IT DOES NOT KILL BACTERIA!!! It merely puts them into suspended animation.

I was considering raw before i went to   www.mybluedog.com and read the reality of raw feeding.I think ill keep feeding the best quality kibble OR  a home cooked diet that is formulated by a board certified nutritionist

Bacteria and other things that would kill humans does not harm a healthy dog. Their digestive system is set up  to handle it and works opposite of ours. Dogs are CARNIVORS, along with many types of wildlife that eat 2 day old road kill and do just fine. Otherwise they would have been extinct by now. Here's why:

Carnivors keep their food in the stomach acid bath for 8-12+ hours. This kills most of the bad stuff.  Any that survived the acid bath is quickly expelled in a short trip through the intestines.

Humans on the other hand.... keep their food in the stomach acid for only a couple hours and a very long time, even days,  in the intestinal tract. This allows for a perfect environment for fermentation as well as huge mulitiplication of bacteria.  This is why, people who eat road kill die! lol  Well, I really have not met anyone who has eaten road kill, but I'm sure that the case is there.

mybluedog is not a scientific study!  case in point: I quote from bluedog... "We know from their carcasses that they die of splintered fowl bones and have very bad dentalia (dental problems)." In the same sentence she tells WHY they found dead animals... dental problems??? If they can't chew properly, it makes perfect sence.  If that was so common in the wild they would all have died many years ago, because that is ALL they eat!!  The subject of skinny wildlife has been brought up too. That is because HUMANS have taken away or severely reduced  land access and the  prey animals for the wildlife to find and eat. Come on! Hundreds of years, if not thousands of years, of exsisting just fine in a normal eco system, says it all. I know a MANY breeders who have not had one single problem with raw, especially whelping puppies! That's also been brought out here by the many who have fed raw for decades. Typically much fewer heath problems are encountered as well as many health problems being solved by feeding raw.

Here's a site that has done their research and can dispell and answer just about any question out there.
