Thanks Bob-O -- answers my question precisely. The USA office had indicated as I was an individual registering and individual dog that the tattoo could be made up basically of any alpha/numeric sequence I chose.

The USA tattoo scheme has been very helpful in returning dogs over the years, as it identifies the region of the breeder, and the breeder designation, as well as the litter. There have been many cases of queries to mail lists regarding tattoo numbers of dogs found lost and/or in kennels where the dog's breeder and owner were located or identified because of the USA tattoo number. People knew immediately what part of the country and the specific breeder to contact to I'D the dog. It does not happen so often with the "custom" tattoo numbers. Just something to consider.
