What do you expect from a country which annually executes more humans than all the other countries in the world COMBINED? (I just saw this this week, apparently they are going to switch to lethal injection for executions, instead of the ol' .45 bullet to the back of the head...   )

And they DO raise dogs for meat. I don't have time to find links right now, but I've previously read that breeders of large breeds like St. Bernards have to be careful their puppies don't go to China, because those are the breeds preferred by meat breeders, as they produce more meat per carcass.

The most horrible story I ever read to come out of China was by a Chinese doctor who had fled the country. As you are aware, China has a policy of one child per family. A mother had just given birth to her second child, a boy. Since their first child was a girl, and boys are preferred, they badly wanted to keep the child.

The doctor was told to kill the child by making a lethal injection into its brain. She balked at doing it, and when called on the carpet by her supervisor, got so emotional, she fainted.

When she recoverd consciousness, the child was dead, and she had been relieved of her job. She fled the country, and managed to get her story published in Reader's Digest.

I don't know how common the killing of babies is. Most of the 'surplus' children (almost ALWAYS girls, a boy would probably only be up for adoption if handicapped) are adopted out to foreign countries. One of the nurses I used to work with adopted one of these babies, and told me the Chinese government insists the kids be taught about Chinese culture and language. I supposed that's so when all those bachelors in China come looking for wives, they'll be able to persuade them to come back....HAH!!

Oh, by the way, I understand selective abortion of female fetuses is common in China, too.    As far as I'm concerned, those surplus bachelors in China can pine for love until their penises shrivel and drop off, before I'd ever let a kid I'd adopted go back there to marry!

They made their bed, they can lie in it...ALONE!

(Please note, this is not a rant against the Chinese race in general, but against a very, very repressive, cruel government that is doing its best to keep its people from moving into the 21st century.)

Link for the use of St. Bernards as meat:

I don't have time to check the reliability of the information, but since it is culled from various sources, I'd suspect it's accurate, and not PETA-type propoganda.

Thanks Silbersee and sunsilver for letting me know I "Thought" wrong.

It also made think back to documentaries on the massacre of Chinese human prisoners to provide

fresh organs to high bidders.

Dear God....

So, this is the reason for the inhumane slaughter methods!  Please don't continue reading if you're the sensitive sort!

When our taxi driver realised that we were interested in dog meat, he recommended a shop, where dogs are slaughtered. He explained that they slaughter wild dogs which they catch in the street, as their meat is better than the meat of dogs bread in captivity. He adds that the way the dog meat is prepared in Peixian is the most authentic one.

Even if the local government has forbidden slaughter in the street, as it disturbs the traffic, one can see traces of blood everywhere. Once we arrived in the dog meat shop, the owner was about to catch a yellow  dog with an iron pinch. The dog was petrified. The shop owners assistant started to beat the dog’s head with a stick. The dog screamed in pain and lost all  control and urinated and defecated at the same time. More and more people came close to watch the scene. Even the three-year old son of the owner watched with a lot of interest. As the dog kept fighting in his agony, the assistant reacted coldly and hit the dog more strongly with his stick. The dog finally collapsed. The owner took a knife and started immediately opening the throat of the dog. The assistant pulled out all the organs of the dog and removed the skin from the dog. After having watched the bloody scene, the taxi driver asked the owner: was the dog scared? Without having to think twice, the owner of the shop responded Obviously. It is the same as a person condemned to death. A dog is also scared when he is taken to the place where he will be executed. The dog knows also that he will be killed. And he emphasized: ”A dog who is scared produces adrenaline, the meat of the dog slaughtered that way is very good for men's virility.

A book on raising dogs advises breeders to give the animals drugs after eating so they will rest, and gain weight faster. It also tells them how to prevent them from burning extra calories by barking. The most valuable part of the dog is not the meat, but gallstones:

The most precious part of the dog is not the meat, but what they call the “treasure of the dog". They mean by that kidney and gall stones. It seems that medicine produced with these stones is very expensive and very efficient against liver problems. One kilo of these stones can be sold for over 100 yen. That is why  these breeders use often very inhumane methods to produce these treasures of dogs.  Breeders mix often hair and fur of other animals in the dog’s food. The stomach of the dog cannot digest completely this hair and fur and this provokes the creation of these stones. Breeders then operate the dog to extract the stones. These operations are done repeatedly and the breeder obtains with this an enormous profit. Mr. Fan explains that every part of the dog is a treasure, the fur of the dog can be sold to tailors to make collars for coats, the teeth are sold to Vietnam and Thailand, where they are sold as ivory, they even make a powder out of the dog’s bones, but we do not know what that is used for. Mr. Fan says ironically the dog is the best friend of humans and also the most intelligent animal. That is why dog's brains  is the most stimulating food for the human brain.

As dog meat is produced in very big quantities in Peixian, it is conditioned  and sold in tins all over the country.

I don't think I'll be visiting China anytime soon....

Sunsilver,

and I bet that you can buy canned dog meat at the Asian markets here in the U.S. (under the counter). Very disturbing!

As to the partial live abortion of female fetuses, that is common knowledge and reported by the United Nations. It is so severe that in certain countries, there is now an unhealthy ratio of males vs. females. But that is not just restricted to China. You can check in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and a lot of other countries. As a matter of fact, there was a documentary in Germany about certain villages where men lived by themselves, as there were no more women in that area.

Kidnapping children for organ harvesting happens a lot in Russia.

With all that being said, there are lots of human atrocities happening all over the world, some right in our own backyard. I am a firm believer that if we all open our eyes and ears, a lot can be prevented.

Happy New Year,

Chris

Yes, Chris, I'm aware these things don't just  happen in China. As a matter of fact, just a couple of weeks ago, I saw an article about Indian/Pakistani women in the U.K. travelling to India to have abortions done. This came to light when statistics showed a skewed birth ration for that particular ethnic group.

The article I've quoted above provides links to the eating of dog meat in North America. There are even dog farms in some areas, where dogs are raised for their meat. The next time you know someone who's giving a pet away for free, make sure they know about this, because that's where most of these animals come from.

Please dont start in on abortions, or or blame an individual for his culture.  People eat all kinds of things around the world.

They raise animals for this purpose.  I dont think anyone is importing a 1,000 dollar dogs for a picnic.    The world has gotten smaller and yes alot of us disagree with many of the idea's we are becoming aware of in other cultures around the world.

And yes the injustice's to humans is far more serious than anything done to animals.  Its all about money  this changing world, and power.  Maybe we'd be better off back in the stone age.  Maybe mother earth is gonna put us there herself.

No one should inflict they're particular view on another by force, live and let live. Dont judge lest ye be judges.

JMO.

Two Moons, selling and eating pet animals for food is illegal in the United States.

Eating dog meat is part of the culture in some countries. I don't object or expect them to change, but surely pressure could be put on them to use more humane methods?

i watched a faces of death movie a while back and they had a section in the movie about this....very disturbing to watch....in the kitchen the mother prepared puppies like we do chicken....the saddest part tho is they always start with a live animal...i guess for the reason sunsilver gave....one part was with a GSD in an alley, i seem to remember it being said that a GSD was a perfered dog...don't remember why....

someone mentioned something about slaughter houses here.....we actually had (have) one right down the road from us....about two miles....my husband worked there and lasted about a week....it gave him nightmares...the DO kill the sheep/lambs alive...cut their throat and let the blood drain...he did not do any of the killing but he said he could hear the animals screaming...said they sounded like babies....

but about two years a go they built a new subdivision there and shut the slaughter house down...

Every time this subject is addressed on this board, some flaming idiot/s jumps to the defense of those who are skinning alive dogs for their pelts. Their excuses are - those videos are fakes, it's not true RIGHT!!......we kill livestock for food, don't we?............those people are so poor they will do anything for money to feed their families................it acceptable in some cultures to eat domestic animal like dogs and cats.....some people care more about animals than humans. Well, maybe some or even all of the above are true, but anytime a human being can skin alive a dog for it's fur I can find nothing to excuse that level of blatant cruelty.  If they must have dog fur to trim the garments they are selling to the US, then for god sake they could at least kill the dogs first. After seeing those videos about a year ago, I will no longer buy any garments made in Asia that are fur trimmed regardless of what the label says.

Two Moons, I think you would do well by educating yourself about the dog fur market in Asia before you offer up another of your opinions. Google "dogs for fur" and watch that video of the GSD being skinned alive. No matter if those dogs are providing food or fur, skinning them alive should offend you.
