Unfortunately, Parvo really is that bad.
It can live outdoors from six months to up to 20 years, according to some experts, and can even survive frost.
It can be transmitted on your shoes, on your car tyres, and by birds and insects too, so it's really difficult, if not impossible, to keep your property clean.
You should therefore isolate any new puppies until they've had their full series of three vaccination shots (typically from about six weeks old up to 20 weeks old), and you certainly shouldn't take them to places such as public parks, etc., where they may come across other dogs (who may be carriers for the virus even if they don't show symptoms) and, of course, their poop, which could be infected.
If you do a Google search for a free book called "Parvo Treatment 101", you'll find out a lot more about this nasty virus.
Mark.
