I once had three cats and a large GSD male.  Two of the cats would run, dog would chase and one day docked a cat's tail (neat job- according to vet) and the other cat had the uncanny ability to stand still and out stare Otto.  Otto would back away from this cat.  No hissing or growling, just a stare.

I expected my current GSD to have no problem with our little Burmese (kitty tolerated our other GSD), but from day 1, kitty fuzzed, hissed, growled and ran from Sof - she was a puppy for heavens sake.  Now Sofie actively hunts this perfect prey.

I've put several rooms off limits to dog with invisible fence inside stations.
