In the mean time, its a great time to learn and educate yourself about the sport. Here are some nice books:
Susan Barwig: Schutzhund (I've had people tell me the traning methods in here are old-fashioned, but the value here is a good description of what exactly the sport is.)
Ivan Balabanov: Advanced Schutzhund- Definately a little "heady" for the newcomer, but by the time you read the first one you will really get a lot of out of it.
I bet when you read those two, you will name half a dozen or more "bad things" that happened in that session you described.
Good luck on finding a club that suits you and your dog.
Best wishes.

Trio,
Did you say that the dog lived with the trainer for the first 9 months of his life??? Was he the breeder? Did he do foundation work while he was there?
Even if he did he should have known you don't just throw a 3 year old dog right into it. The suggestion about whipping him, should make you run far and fast and never look back!
50 miles is not too bad for traveling to a good club. I used to travel 5 hours each way once a week. I think most people drive about an hour away. They are just too few and far between, but a good club is worth it.

Debby,
Yes, the dog lived with the trainer for the first 9 months of his life. The trainer is not the breeder, but works for the breeder. The litter was born at his house and he kept all the pups with him until each one was sold. ( Took nine months to sell Trigger to the first owner.)
<>My understanding was that the trainer only did obedience work with Trigger. I did question the trainer as to how he could be so sure the dog would bite the sleeve when there had been no previous protection work with him. The trainer told me he had recently trained Trigger's full brother to bite for the lady that owns him and that's how it did it. (The lady did not want a trained Schutzhund dog but rather a protection dog.) Now that I think about it, that doesn''t make much sense, either. Is that how protection dogs are trained??? I was told Trigger's full brother never had any foundation work, either.
<>Think I'll read those recommended books and educate myself.

GET OUT OF DODGE AS FAST AS CAN THIS IS NOT PROPER APPROACH TO YOUR FIRST SCHUTZ TRAINING SESSION UNLESS THERE ARE SOME FACTS LEFT OUT YOU HAVE NOT TOLD US...HAS THIS DOG BEEN WORKED OR IMPRINTED ALREADY BY SOMEONE ELSE....? WHY AT THREE YEARS OLD...HAVE YOU BEEN PREPARING THIS DOG WITH THE SUSAN BARWIG METHODS AHEAD OF TIME ARE YOU TRACKING THE DOG HAVE YOU ALREADY DONE ALL THE OBEDIENCE AND THE LONG DOWN STAY AND NOW YOU ARE GETTING READY FOR AGRESSION . IM TOTALLY CONFUSED AS TO WHY JUST START WHIPPING A DOG OR EVEN BRINGING OUT A SLEEVE....WHERE WAS THE TEST FIRST? DID YOU DO THAT LAST WEEK OR THE DAY BEFORE? WHO EVALUTATED THE DOG FOR BITE WORK/ AND HOW DID THEY DO IT AND WHEN DID THEY DO IT.....jEHANNUM IS RIGHT I ASSUME THAT U HAVE READ ALL THESE BOOKS OR AT LEAST SUSAN AND RAY HILLIARD , WHICH CAN BE YOUR BIBLE.......
OBEDIENCE , TRACKING AND THEN THE LAST LIMB IS THE SLEEVE WORK , BUT SOMEWHERE , SOMEONE SHOULD EVALUATE THE DOG AND YOU , AND SIT DOWN WITH YOU AND SHOW YOU THE PLAN STEP BY STEP , AND GIVE YOU INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO TRAIN AT HOME DURING THE WEEK, AND LEAD INTO THIS....

This is EXACTLY why I am with the club I'm with now. EVERY Schh. club that I have taken any of my dogs to in the past, no matter what the age, has always immediatly put a sleeve on right off the bat to "see what my dog was made of"!!! And when I was told that my dogs were junk and could never do the work, I simply asked..." How can you expect him to do what is expected when he's never had any type of this training before. You are a stranger, coming at me, screaming and yelling, waving this big object at BOTH of us, and you don't expected him to want to eat you???" I took my dog, and left!!!
<> The club I'm at now, Blue Ribbon Dog Training, is absoletly wonderful! They are some of the nicest, easy going, dedicated, non-judgemental, there to help you suceed people I have every had the pleasure of working with in well over 15 yrs!!!!
<>IMO, I would tuck tail and run from any club that just wants to stick a sleeve in the face of a dog with no prior experience, no matter what the age of the dog!

Chachi65, your first Schutzhund day certainly makes a lot more sense than mine. In my case, I do believe the trainer thought he was doing the right thing. Maybe that's what he was taught? Sounds like he is not alone in his methods.
I have seen my dog worked into a foaming frazzle by a couple of neighborhood punks that keep teasing him through the fence. (I recently had to replace the screws in the fence with a type of locking screw as they have started to loosen them from the outside.) I have no doubt if I let Trigger loose after these kids he would bite for real.
