I have had GSDs since I was a child, so 40 years of experience as an owner. I have had experience as a breeder but find it to be too troublesome. I am not an expert but can share my experience. We always got our dogs from Busecker Schloss Kennels. IMHO they produced the best mix of good looking dogs with strong drives and smarts. I have a female cossed with DDR show lines and V Turo vom Busecker Schloß. Best dog I ever owned. I have several show dogs (2 males) from Top VA dogs from Germany. They are certainly beautiful dogs but I will never own another show dog. They have been morphed into their present form at the expense of drives and smarts. So to answer your question, I agree that to find a mix between the two lines is a crapshoot. I would recomend a finding a kennel that produces working dogs with good confirmation. I would avoid all the sport lines (Crok, Fero etc). There is a member here Alyska kennels who is worth checking out. Too many people trying to produce the next Ursus is troubling and repulsive to me.

it take several varables comming togather to have a trained shepherd. lines with training ability, a owner that has good knowledge on bringing a young dog to its ability, the helper has to have good ability to look at whats going on with the dog. both lines have good ability, not too many owners have good ability. I over heard a young man telling how his 17 mo working dog was comming back from his belting the dog for biteing his arms and legs when he was a puppy. at that rate of come back the dog should be ready before it dies. from most of the comments I read no one has real experience training a dog. good dogs can be found in show and working lines if you have the ability. why not have a handsome working shepherd from show lines. its a real pleasure to have it all.

show lines have good teeth, I wouldn't breed to many of the working lines for teeth improvement. for good hips ask around, several lines have good hips. I've seen some good working ability from this litter. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/125170.html
