Kor, nice posts. I agree about breeders promises. Even some advertisements on this site ocassionally hit new lows. Sometimes you have to wonder if the breeder/advertiser doesn't really understand what they are saying. On the other hand it is the buyers responsibility to do the reasearch and know what they really want. I don't, however, disagree about your view on socializing a pup. I don't care how strong a pup is, socialization is one of the cornerstones of it's training. Pups need to be developed they don't just 'happen' into good dogs.

Spook; Good morning to you! I guess I just did not expand enough on my point about not believing a puppy needs to be socialized. I do agree pups should "see the world", but I guess I was leaning more towards the comments others made about how it was "normal" basically to __have__ to "socialize" a puppy. I take my youngster all over town, but I would not want a puppy that I __had__ to do that with to get him to accept things..I hope that is a little more clear. I was able to follow the links to where Fireguy got his puppy from, and while I believe the breeder has the best intentions, I just don't think they have the experience needed to be breeding just yet, if this puppy was sold as a working prospect and it __needs__ a "day or two" to overcome and accept "new things", I just don't in my heart, and with my past experiences, believe this pup will ever be what any seasoned Schutzhunder would consider a solid dog. I don't think the breeder really knew what the pup truly was..and there in lies the problem, inexperience x 2= Fireguy's pup. Like any typical puppy buyer, he would not have been able to return the puppy by the time he hit the end of the driveway, he had already decided the puppy was his for life, and thats GREAT, I just would like for him to understand his pup will more than likely have very limited capabilities of being a "true" schutzhund dog. But I am sure he will always be an A-1 companion. I hope that clarifies a little better Spook, I do take a youngster everywhere, but I don't want to __have__ to do it with a puppy..clear as mud now right?

I hope Fireguy's puppy surprises all and does well in Schutzhund or whatever else he wants to do with him. I always think of a dog I knew of in the 70's, a Malamute rehomed 3 times by the time he was a year old. The last owner was going to have him PTS saying he was incorrigible, stupid and could not learn anything. Lucky dog was rescued by a person who knew dogs well and he went on to become the most titled dog in the world of any breed (OB titles). I know that's not the norm, but it never hurts to hope LOL. Sometimes these dogs surprise us with their resilience.

Kor, I understand. I have had one that was not what I hoped for. She became our family pet. No way would she go back.

Socializing does not change the inherited nerves and temperemnt of the pup. However, improper or inadequate socializing can ruin a good dog. Myself, I strongly believe in aggressive controlled socializing from a very early age. I believe you should "imprint" your pup as much as possible. I have no problems with people buying a shy or timid pup as long as they understand what they are getting. It concerns me alot when people are wanting to get into the dog business and don't understand how they could pay alot of money from a litter with outstanding parents and the pup not be acceptable for breeding.

Has anyone ever asked me about doing schutzhund, because personally those were not my intentions. I have never said that. Not everyone is doing schutzund, i wanted a pup for Obedience only and work on tracking sooner. Yes i am new to the breed but not turned away because of what you say as a bad breeder. I am very pleased with my breeder, i recieved TONS and i mean TONS of emails once i posted that i wanted to get a pup. EVERY SINGLE person on here rips other breeders apart because their dogs are better. Well that's a matter of opinion i say. I never wanted to take my pup back to her, although she said she would take him back. I was not taken by his cute little puppy face. For everyone who just gave up and said take it back, thanks for no help, for those of you who actually gave good advice i thank you and i heed that advice. I got on here to learn about this breed and did nothing but learn about the meaness of the people who say they are the most Knowledgeable. It bothers me to hear you say that my breeder didn't know what she was doing. It absolutely amazes me that only a couple people on hear actually had positive things to say instead all of you on here, who say that you only want the best for this breed, are lying. Since I came on this site for Help and didn't really ever recieve any, just cut downs to myself and the breeder, I will not be coming back to this site, i will look for advice from other sources. Daniel, go away.

by kor_und_leistungzucht on 15 February 2007 - 21:02

Good afternoon Daniel; I am quite sure you will be reading this..those who "storm away" never really do. Daniel, I need to take a moment to remind you, YOU are the one that asked here for advice..no one emailed you and asked you how your puppy was..correct? Case in point, here is your orginal post on this thread: "I just got my pup from a breeder, we got him on tuesday night and i slept next to his crate. He whined most of the night which i thought was normal. We had to run some errands yesterday and put him in his crate. After about 30 mins we came back home, let him out and he has been acting really timid, and scared of most everything. We have been showing him lots of attention for the past two days. Any suggestions. He is pottying out side most of the time that is not the issue." You recieved a variety of replies to this post..some telling you this was "ok" for a puppy to be that way, others had a differing opinion/experience. Even if all you want is for the dog to do tracking and obedience, the dog still must have strength of character to work independantly in new environments. You did not like the responses you recieved from some of us, thats fine..everyone is entitled to their opinion, and you asked here on a public forum for anyones..well, you got it. You then took the opinions that were in agreement with your way of thinking, and your breeders, and decided those were the only helpful ones..the rest were malicious and only served to denigrate your breeder etc. Well, herein lies the problem..I am not a breeder, don't have a puppy or dog to sell you..but I have been in your shoes before my friend..several times I might add. I have learned the hard and expen$ive way..and now I just plain old know better. I won't comment on your thread any longer, it is clear you took our advice personally and as an attack on your breeder and your puppy..so be it. This was never the intent..in fact most did not even know the breeding on your puppy, (nor did we need to know it to give our opinions based on what YOU described here), we were simply offering you the pearls of our hard (and expensive) earned education. Sounds like you will be ok with the support from your breeder and your trainer, they seem to agree with your train of thought and overall assessment of the puppy..thats GREAT! When you get ready to do that CDx or UD and TD and FH on your puppy, let me know, I'll gladly pay your entry fees... I seriously wish you the best with this puppy, I hope you prove me and others that had the same opinion as me terribly wrong...I hope to find a message here from you asking me to submit entry fees for a TDx/FH for you and your puppy!
