4pack

by 4pack on 23 January 2007 - 16:01

Echo what is the age of the pups now? I had a similar experience with one of my last litter and chose to put her down after the 4th week she suddenly seemed to be in allot of pain when touched and was tight in a ball and stiff. This pup too, hardly ate and I supplimented her with formula and high calorie gel to keep her going as long as she did. My pup always slept curled up and would fall asleep on the teet. She did show play and other normal puppy functions, but always tired and very much smaller than the rest of the litter. She was normal at first but within a week started falling behind. Smallest pup, last to open eyes, never did walk right just crawled around fumbling. I tried to get her to catch up but in the end she seemed in pain and mom didn't want her near the nest so we decided she was done. Could have been a younger pup as my bitch was breed every day for 8 days. I didn't really think of that until others brought it up. Still not sure that was the case.

No jokes here OK. It is quite possible this pups digestive system isnt absorbing enough nutrient. Some of my GSD's have sensitive digestive systems and werent getting what they needed out of any sort of food I tried. I suggest trying Prozyme or Nupro. Nupro also has many other benefits by way of minerals, amino acids fatty acids and more. I have always been able to turn around sick dogs/pups with Nupro. I would put some raw liver or hamburg in a blender with forumla powder, warm water and mix in the Nupro or Prozyme. Blend until its a paste.

4pack, They are about 7 to 8 weeks now, which is why we are approaching a critical stage, I have people wanting to adopt her, But can not allow it until we know what is up with her. This pup shows no pain as of yet, She loves everyone, and is active, But is so tiny, and yes a bit clumsy I would have to agree. I am wondering too if she was the last conceived. If so will all of this just go away ? I suppose more tests and time will tell us the answers, I'm just so impatient about these sort of things.

I second looking into the Mega-E issue. It is easy to check for, just have the vet do an xray with contrast.

She can't be that much younger than her siblings. All puppies are conceived at about same time (at about 2-4 days after ovulation). Even if the breedings were 10 days apart, the most difference in age that can be there is 1-2 days - not enough to notice

I would not dismiss the dwaf, because of being thin. Does she look to be a long hair. I have had 2 of them, Uran carries the gene. They have a different look to them. I wish you the best

Though I haven't had this experience with a dog, the description fits exactly with a foal and with an antelope with Congenital heart disease. No food or care can cure. Heartbreaking as it may seem, hold in your arms and let it go.

And don't forget to look at her liver for a shunt....

Ranchinglady, and that is exactly where my mind has been all along, Her enemia, her exhaustion, yet high spirits, When we asked the vet about her I fully expected and told him I anticipated a heart murmor, his initial exam he agreed, given that her gums were so white, lack of appetite, and failure to thrive, and easilly tired. I am writing everything down to take back on monday, Hope we will have more to go on by then. Again I appreciate all of your comments, and look forward to anything any of you have to ad. This is NOT a GSD pup guys, she is a cowdog mix of something. I know that the diag has nothing to do with GSD or not GSD but thought I would remind everyone. Ranchinglady as hard as it would be, If her diag. is not good we will do just that. I won't have her live a misserable life. That would hurt much more.

With the stumbeling, is it kind of like still 4 week puppy like? My dwarf puppies were like that too and thin also. The did not want to ween either. They did good as long as they nursed the mother but when weened they started to have some other complications and started to fade away. I know this isn't going to be a Politically correct thing to say but they actually did look normal when born but as everyone else grew they started to "look" retarded or like they had downs syndrome or something. I then found the website that dealt with dwarfism in german shepherds and they looked EXACTLY like the puppies on that site! Vickie
