Don't underestimate ehrlichia. My beautiful 5 yr old male is still recovering from a devastating episode (in January!) that nearly killed him. He has been on Frontline--all year round in TX-- for years. The first treatments of doxycycline were not enough (it came back); he has now been treated with Imizol and is still on steroids. All it takes is one of those little nasties. He could hardly move, bleeding from the mouth (all very sudden) and had 5 days intensive care. I'm sure the tick died from the Frontline, but he got a bite in first, apparently. Some folks keep their dogs on Doxycycline all the time just in case.... Human ehrlichia is not unknown, by the way.
