Bhaugh,

When you say you wouldnt adopt to military are you refering to a single soldier situation, or a military family period?

My husband is in the Army. Soon we are moving across the country with my GSD. Yes, having him make things more complicated, but there is NO WAY that I would ever give up my dog for any reason.

You could choose to adopt your dog out to the so called "perfect" family and they could choose to give up the dog as well. Dogs are sold/given away all the time by people who arent in the military.

I didnt adopt to military period.

Just to let you know....your an exception AND the base here does not allow German Shepherds on the "book of non acceptable dogs" So if the family gets caught, the dog has to go.

Mastiffs were my other breed. They couldnt even get past the guard gate.

Kelly, I believe there's a couple Air Force bases in Nevada. Try not to be offended by people not adopting to military families, while the military is a reflection of the civilian population, we do move more regularly than a lot of civilian families, which allows the irresponsible people who have pets, an excuse to dump animals regularly. It's an unfortunate fact, so while I would never junk my pets, some people aren't going to take that chance because maybe they had in the past and were burned, or more correctly, the animal got the short end of the stick

I personally think this is disgusting. I have served in the Army for 14 years. My old man, 11y/o GSD, just passed away in January from hemangiosarcoma. I was a single mom and had to deploy and then report to school. I found an amazing boarding kennel on 40 acres that I paid monthly to keep him for 18 months. That dog went from Georgia, Florida area to Texas, and on to Washington State. He has been clear across the country. Not once did the thought enter my mind to get rid of him.
I do have to add in, please do not discriminate against all military families. If they can prove that the dog would not be dumped each PCS, you may actually get an amazing home for them. My dogs will never leave me other than me paying to board them until my return if I have to.

I never sold a dog to a family in the military. However I still got a number of them back with some pretty lame excuses. I'm not sure it's fair to suggest that placing a dog with a military family is any more risky than with another breeder for example. In my experience other breeders are the quickest to return a dog of any breed.

jaggirl, my daughter served in the AF for 5 years.....SC, London, CA. She had a bassett that probably cost her at least 25% of her salary for boarding, transporting, etc. She'd have never given up that dog permanently either.

I agree with Jaggirl. I dont think that is is necessary to discriminate against all military families. As with ALL placements of puppies and dogs proper screening should be done. A little extra screening for military to make sure there is someone the dog could go to in the event of deployment or extended time away.

Tons of dogs are given up daily by 'ideal' families with poor excuses.

Me and Cam are traveling up to New England this week! Then off to Washington state soon. We have already spent time Georgia and and also Virginia. Following a soldier around has been quite the adventure :)  I couldnt imagine leaving Cam behind.
