D.H, I'm not complaining too much about German Dogs being over priced. I'm mostly complaining about people charging an Arm and a leg over theses so called "Personal protection dogs" who cant even perform at national levels! I've personally saw a PPD doing protection work in protection and in obedience and wasn't pleased at all and the dog costed the owner $30,000! If I haven't been mistaken... The dog wasn't even a SchH3! I do admit that the dog was a nice dog, a nice gorgeous pure black working line but wasn't worth the kind of money that the owner bought.

"I'm mostly complaining about people charging an Arm and a leg over theses so called "Personal protection dogs" who cant even perform at national levels!" I would think the dog need more civil/defense/fight drives than the average prey drive schutzhund dog. If it's a true "protection dog", then the dog wouldn't need to run after the attacker/intruder, just defend. Why would the dog need to be a national level dog? For most, the dogs presence is enough to deter an attacker, let alone it's ability. The police don't rely on the dog 100% to protect them. Why should others? Many well trained K-9's lose their lives on the streets, even with their partner carrying a gun and being well trained to use both the gun and the dog. Also, a lot of the police dogs aren't even titled in schutzhund, does that make them not worthy of their job? Jeff

I'm confused, what does this have to do with Mittelwest Kennels!!!!

This probably should be a new thread, with that topic of Personal Protection Dog. It can be very deceiving lable. What I have observed is when a dog is lacking in areas of sport and companion (poof) PPD for sale. It make them feel that there is still value in this dog and helps the bank account.

neuen-polizei, your question quoted "Why would the dog need to be a national level dog?" If I'm going to be paying $10,000 and up for a dog I expect the dog to perform at national levels and have very good Schutzhund scores (I expect the dog to be SchH3). Why would I pay so much money on a dog to protect me when I can go to a gun store and buy myself a a nice shotgun or pistol for $700 and up plus shooting classes to learn to shoot properly? Yes Well trained K-9's do loses their lives on the streets... I'm sadden and angry over this.. Some incidents could be avoided by using common sense. Don't get me wrong and I'm not anti police officer but some cops should never be in the k9 unit in the first place because of lack of common sense. I was reading an article online where this officer let his dog chase a suspect in a RIVER! Yes the cop actually let the dog swim after the suspect and the suspect dunk the poor dog under the water and the dog soon drowned and died. It angers me because this could be easily avoided if common sense was used in this case. Us the tax payers pay alot of money for theses dogs to come to the USA and one stupid mistake would cost the tax payers money lots of money. you quoted "a lot of the police dogs aren't even titled in schutzhund, does that make them not worthy of their job?" That is absolutely false. LOTS of police dogs are schutzhund trained. A close friend of mine owns a gorgeous sable dog who was a police dog in germany and is Schutzhund trained ( quite obviously as he won universal sieger last year). Most departments uses Schutzhund to see if the dog is a good candidate for police work. How else would they evaluate the dog?

All that talk about "common sense".....what an oxymoron. Stephen

Young lady, do you think you can say what you want, with impunity and NOT EVER be called to task? Part of being professional, involves SOME measure of veracity and integrity. This is a PUBLIC forum. When you make public statements attacking the "common sense" of trained law enforcement officials, you should be mature enough to accept whatever you get in return. Law enforcement departments go through YEARS of training, development of protocol, and establishing procedures, that you don't have a clue about. Your cavilier admonishment of their judgement, without knowing the facts, warrants a finger being pointed at you. I don't know you from Adam's house cat, Brittany, there is no "personal issue" with you. The issue is, you cannot capriciously post whatever pops in your head, support it with, "it's common sense", and expect it to be taken as gospel. There are people that come to this site for valid information. You cannot offer BS and everyone turn their head the other way, as not to disagree with you, while those who are trying to learn, look at your posts as viable information. Sorry, but that is part of professionalism also. If you do not want to be held accountable for what you post in a public arena, I STRONGLY suggest you look in the mirror and make your comments to it. It won't talk back to you and hurt your fragile feelings. Stephen

Please, this is about Mittelwest kennels not about all this other personal opinions. Make a new topic if you must.

Brittany, I am fully aware that many of the police dogs are schutzhund titled. There are differences in the points dogs that get 100 points in protection but aren't fighting the helper, and the dog who gets 80 points and is truly fighting out there. As a helper, I have worked both kinds of dogs. What I would want on the training field would be different from what I would want protecting me at home. Also, I don't know why anyone would pay that much for a dog. Doing your homework you can find dogs from $1500-$5000 depending on what you are looking for.
