In this case its not deposits being refunded, its buying a dog back. However, I would rather buy back a puppy instead of having the hassles of arguing over paying if and when I sell it . All it takes is one bad apple, if you know what I mean.  I would prefer to end the contact with that person as soon as possible. Having to sell the puppy before refunding the money could mean alot of aggravation from the owner.  I say give the money back and be done it with.  Of course, I don't breed alot so if a puppy comes back and it doesn't sell soon or at all, its no big deal. He can stay here.  Give the money back. That way I don't have the fact hanging over my head I owe someone.  JMO..

I would have a vet completely examine the dog before anything else.  You don't know how this dog was treated, what he was fed, what he was exposed to, etc.

If the vet green-lights the dog, take the dog back and explain to the buyer that they will get a REDUCED refund when you resell it.  And each week should reduce more and more of the refund.  These people committed to buy, it isn't fair that you should have to absorb the cost of food.

And I disagree with the person that said "you bred them, you'd be taking care of them anyway".  First of all, you don't actually know that.  If you want to speculate, that works both ways.  Maybe if they didn't buy them, someone would've come along the next day or two and taken him and been happy with him.  The sale was made, the responsibility of the dog is now they buyer's.  That includes the cost of reselling the dog and caring for the dog.  PERIOD.

Best of luck to you (and the dog).

All that shenanigans checking stuff @ three weeks of ownership? If it turns out you get awful reports on the pups condition, you seriously want to leave him there after only three weeks?

Bottom line, I am the breeder, I will buy my pup back no matter what. Regardless of his condition or health, it is not the pup or dogs fault. It is the breeder's responsibility to take it back. If its the owner's fault, I surely wouldn't want to leave him there to get worse.  Its all about the puppy/dog, not whose fault the situation is the way it is. I am the breeder and as a responsible and ethical breeder, I will do right by the puppy/dog. JMO and I can respect others if different than mine. Wink Smile

Something does not smell right..WHY would a person claim...you see I said..claim to be the best or top trainer in the city of WHAT? what is an Inhome trainer anyway?  I smell a skunk...sorry but this does not pass the smell test..Are you sure this pup is yours?? I would have a lot of questions in person , with the pup  , hope it is tatooed or chipped, and I would take it to the vet before I bring it into my home..People, who have not been in this venue but to own a dog, and seen what people pull on breeders, have no clue what this   Claim to be or wanna be, person has conjured up...IT is not sounding right in my books.

The meer fact that she has 4 or 5 other dogs, no thanks , of bring the pup into your home without  a vet check..It may have parvo...or some disease...do not trust this story...  You endanger your home or other dogs with a ploy...If she is truthful and she is legit, she can meet you at your vet and then make an agreement in writing to take the pup back , with not a full refund until you find out what has happened to this pup...IT may have been kicked abused or who knows what..

Being in the business I have been, I have seen much more than meets the eye and Mahon agrees with me...do not agree to anything until your vet checks this pup thoroughly.. get her to sign all papers of transfer over to you...get one from akc...then give her an amount , not full , that will , after you explain to her in plain english, that any  Claimed trainer, should know that a gsd pup , cannot be put with other dogs , of smaller breed , and that is not the proper way to introduce a pup anyway, be agreeable , but not full, between both of you...be firm but professional to her..

This one takes the CAKE>>do not let the cake get eaten without the iceing..if you get what I mean.....Please get documented your vet check up also...give her a copy so she cannot claim any reason to come back on you...

Yes I agree with YR;  4 or 5 other dogs is like having 4 of 5 toddlers running around wild with a GSD puppy;  no thanks bad decision on your part.  BUT that said less your vet checkup and only 3 weeks at that home as long as puppy has not been beat up or traumatized in any other way;  refund... pending of course your contract.  Good luck  Nan  Boston's can be little shits to boot...

Ok-don't give back the money...

BUT YOU ARE OBLIGATED TO TAKE BACK THE PUPPY,

Of course it's not a test drive, it's not a test drive for the thoysands of dogs that get dumped  into the dog pounds after being crashed down the road either...

ANY breeder that will not TAKE back their dog ( I am  not saying buy back), should not be breeding dogs...

Yeah, vet check, but take back. That's one of the downfalls to breeding. You take the bad along with the good!

Now the follow-up.

Thank you for the advice. Before posting I knew my course of action. I wanted to see other opinions on similar cases.

I now have the puppy back with all paperwork. Puppy is healthy. I saw him a week prior to him being returned.

Money returned minus deposit. Both parties agreed this was fair.

My lesson was to stick with my gut feeling on not selling her the dog. There are so many people that claim to be a super dog trainer that truly know absolutely nothing. This I believe is the case.

Shame on ME.

Puppy follow-up. Mama is having a great time with him. He respects the older dogs. Crate trained, potty trained, sit, platz and walks on lead. This VA sired male has a nice head with an excellent topline. Believe I may show him in the fall. He is the half brother to my SG1 USCA SS Ellie von Haus Lucht.

Thanks again

Mike
