I find D.H's post insightful and demonstrates understanding of canine behavior.Often times the human factor adds to the confusion. I found these articles on canine behavior useful: http://www.mmilani.com/dog-articles.html Hope this helps.

It appears I struck a real nerve with my questions about breaking up dog fights. To clarify, I keep the dogs separated, but the house dog, who is a soft sweetheart, accidentally was let out as I was feeding a very hard, dog aggressive bitch who bolted the kennel to join the battle. Both dogs put up quite a fight and I think one of them would have killed the other if we had not intervened. Maybe not. I'll have to go back to re-read Konrad Lorenz's "On Aggression" (It has been a couple or three decades since I last read it) so my memory may be faulty, but I seem to recall that he said that dogs will not fight to the death. I am not so certain and do not want to test the theory. I did not think about the dog bite report going into insurance statistics, but that could happen I suppose since my insurance carrier pays for my visits to the doctor. My doctor did not ask me what kind of dogs I own so it will be interesting to see if anything comes from this aspect of the dog fight. Bad enough that when I tried to switch home insurance companies last year my agent said I would have difficulty finding a new carrier because I own 3 GSDs. The most practical idea I received IMHO came from a lady in Scotland who emailed me privately and suggested throwing a towel or jacket over one of the dogs' heads and tying it off. In any event, I am going to be more careful and altho I hope this is the last fight I experience, I will be prepared should it happen again. Thanks to all for their input. Alex Cornella

Everyone has an accidental dog fight from time to time, even the most careful among us. You can scratch your head trying to figure out why dogs fight all you want, some do it because they can and some just love to fight. One of the worst bites I ever got was when I stupidly put myself between a dog and a bitch. He thought she was ready to be bred, she did not agree. I never again tried to handle a breeding by myself. Live and learn...... My fights were between my Malamutes, you ain't seen a dog fight til you've seen 2 Malamutes have at each other. They do it for sport LOL.

I know from personal experience that dog's WILL fight to the death if they feel a need to. Not sure what's going on in their heads that makes them think the other dog needs to die other than protecting a bitch or puppies, protecting their human(s), and I can see a starved or neglected dog protecting its food. I worked for a vet and a mongrel that had wandered into a person's yard attacked and killed their dog. I don't know the details though as Doc thought I was too young (I was 15 on a school to work program) to see the dog. Apparently it was pretty torn up.
