This an example of a long coat - he does have an undercoat, btw. Oh, his butt looks a little funny because I got a bit happy with the clippers(he gets a big ole deer butt that has to be trimmed down from time to time).

Have DNA done and you will know for sure if it's a genetic coat or carrier. In some breeds the breeders are getting surprises when the dogs with the longest coats are testing as carriers while dogs with shorter coats are testing as longcoats. The big difference is that while carriers will produce fewer carriers, all puppies sired by longcoats will be carriers. Bottom line - I think the only way to be sure if you have a coat, plush or carrier is DNA. I'll also stick my neck out and say I'd also wager than most if not all plushes will either test as longcoats or carriers. Has anyone had the DNA done and were the results what you expected? |
Where do I get this DNA test?

Is it possible to tell at 3 weeks old if a puppy is going to turn out to be a long coat?? If so, what are the signs?

Beautiful pups, all of them. If correct coat was what you all set out to buy, then go and do some more research. Having said that, as long as the pup is a healthy, happy and even tempered baby, whats your gripe? Dont throw the baby out with the bath water. Long coats will continue to be bred, whether intentionaly or not, and some people will have a preference for them. Neither coat nor colour affects working ability, or soundness, so just enjoy eh? I think all your pups pictured here are gorgeous. To many folk worried about what the pup makes them look like, and what it can do for their trophy cabinets. Maybe all long coat pups should be culled?!!! I think not, they are german shepherds, having a bad hair day, and we should love them all.
And before you start firing the bullets ms and mr grumpys, I probably forgot more about genetics and coat inheritance than some of you will ever know, so spare me the lectures and statistics please.
Like generaly begets like, so if you dont like the two "likes" in the first place, dont put them together and complain that you got extra hair with your pups! There are some stunning dogs which produce longcoats time and again, but that doesnt detract. Ghandi? How many gorgeous offspring has he produced with longcoats? Surely better to produce longcoats now and again than to produce any of the many other far more serious genetic flaws that affect health and wellbeing?
Have a good Sunday all.
