I will offer you a my opinion on why, Bob.  But, don't misunderstand and think I agree with mixing the breeds.

JMO: There are thousands of people that have allergies to dogs.  Some of these people still want dogs and the companionship that they bring.  Poodles are excellent dogs for people who have alergies as they don't have dander or shed.  Many breeders are trying to market to people who have alergies and don't want a poodle hence you see labradoodles and goldendoodles and now shepadoodles (even typing shepadoodle makes me laugh).  I think they are trying to take dogs that are popular and make them hypoallergenic for people who would otherwise not be able to have them.  Boy, I can't wait for the day I can call up a lab and say gimme this trait that trait and so on, put it in a beaker and call me when it's a puppy.  JMO

I will say this.  If I were unable to own a German Shepherd due to an allergy, out of desperation I would try a shepadoodle.

Well, in MY neck of the woods, the spay/heuter campaigns have been so effective, that it's very difficult to get a nice dog from the pound. When I went with my friend to check out the local pound, they had nothing available but large mixed breeds, and one lone female rottie. She was actually the nicest of the lot, but was too much dog for my friend's 15 year old daughter, who was the one who wanted a dog.

They wanted a pup, but eventually had to settle for a 9 mo. old boxer/GSD mix. He's turned into a very nice family dog.

Ontario has outlawed pit bulls, but I understand if you go to the shelters in many places in the U.S., they are crammed with pits and pit mixes, which is not what your average family wants to adopt!

You are right sunsilver. The pounds are full of pit mixes. Most people are afraid to take a chance on them.It is a sad reality. To get anything different you have to be on a waiting list or just get lucky.Poor dogs..

Bob you are right,

and as for posts regarding shedding etc and people with allergies i cannot see by crossing two breeds together can make any difference than going to the Dog Pound and selecting a dog  from there

It is just a ploy and to make an excuse to make money from gullible people who fall for it

someone posted a link earlier about oe bidens dog. on that link there was more information about the kind of  dog barrack obama is looking for. he is looking for a poodle mix because many people believe that since poodles dont shed, people with allergies can own them without showing symptoms of their allergy.

there was another article on msnbc, about how after obama said he was looking for a hypoallergenic dog... the american allergenists or something. a group of doctors specializing in allergies, came out and said that there is absolutly no proof whatsoever that poodles, or poodle mixes are hypoallergenic.

people with dog allergies are allergic to the dog dander, which is dead skin... somehign that all dogs have, nomatter if they are mixed with poodles or not.

but that is such a fluffy ball of cuteness in that picture.

Cute dog, but no cuter than most of the poor unwanted dogs sitting in pounds waiting for homes.

Pharaoh

I met a Shepadoodle in Ashland Oregon at one of my favorite shops there on the main drag.  I was on my way home with 8 week old  baby Pharaoh and wanted a baby Ganesh statue riding his pet rat.

I also bought an Anubis Canopic Jar

.

The shop owner had an 8 month old pup who was a dark grey. He was the product of an accidental mating and not an intentional designer dog.  It was a cute dog and very smart.  It looked alot like the dog in the picture.

sunsilver you are right. The dog pounds in my area are crammed with pit bulls, and pit mixes. They all told me that the dog's they do get bit by are NEVER the Pit Bull's, they are all the other breeds big and small that they have there.  I infact rescued a pit bull, lab mix and he is the best dog :-)  He is just amazing, and friendly, but when it does come to protecting our property and us he is very serious and will not hesitate to protect. As far as people that have allergies (which I am one), you can find non-allergic dog's at the dog pound. I just don't think we should be mixing more breeds together intentionally at least until we can control the population in the dog pounds right now.

Here is a picture of my rescue Tye (Pit Bull/Lab).

and this one with him on his couch and blanky

Rescue from the dog pound, don't go and pay $1500, etc for a mixed breed when sooo many are being put to death at the pounds!!!

It's greed, pure and simple. Those who breed shepadoodles, goldendoodles, Shih-poos and so on con the dog-illiterate public that these are rare, special breeds that are valuable so they can charge high prices for a mixed breed pup or dog. Some people are silly enough to pay the high prices when they could get a similar dog from the local pound for much less. You know what they say about a fool and his money...
